Ukraine

Not to CR, he's been a sleeper in rural Ireland since 1974. Like one of those Japanese soldiers that stayed in the jungle for 35 years

He did once claim that in the event of a Soviet invasion of Ireland (presumably they would have a taken a wrong turn while looking for Beachy Head in fog) he stood ready to grass people up for counter-revolutionary activity.

I don't know the specific conditions of Crimea's status, aside from the administrative experience of the USSR (and the republics within the RSFSR, not the large union republics), and Russia's interest in naval access. When I noticed you edited your post yesterday, it was the original that prompted me to mention the similar thinking that went on in the People's Republic of China (when the Chinese Communists still followed the Soviet Union's lead). And the impression given by your other posts was that you didn't know much about Stalinist nationalities policy (read my responses to co-op a few pages back to see what I'm on about) until told so by Spanky and myself, so apologies if I got the wrong end of the stick.

I'm rather busy, so I get the odd moment to post and sometimes my posts are a little unfinished. My apologies. My understanding is that a republic is a different political entity to a region, which is effectively what a oblast is. I didn't know about the pagan oblast though.

It must. We have to hold steadfast against this aggressive annexation. Where will these Russkies stop? Next they will be targeting Latvia, Estonia, Poland.
who is Russkies? 90% russian people feel that Crimea is own territory. Always.
they hardly will support Putin go to West . No

ps but suddenly they can believe Russian TV

I think some people prefer to believe that it did happen, for some reason.
Ok. I should have said that the first act of the new parliament was to cancel the law. It was later decided not to cancel it until there is a new one to put in its place.

The act was passed but not signed into law, in other words.

There is no agenda here. And tbh I resent the implication.

And some seem to want to make out that absolutely nothing happened. It was the western UA nationalists showing their hand on an absolutely key issue and you don't think that matters?
The interim government is such an unsavoury mess, it'll take a fair good while before we see any signs of civility there.
It's one reason why the "Crimea Crisis" is being plugged so much by the media, to create a diversion of public interest away from Kiev's new "political" elite.
The "Crimea Crisis"also creates a convenient demonic scapegoat of Russia again. One that the likes of Thriller have taken hook line and sinker.

It's been a key issue for politicians since Ukraine became independent. Russian only became an official language in August 2012 under Yanukovych. It's hardly surprising that nationalist politicians wanted to overturn the decision when the corrupt Kremlin poodle was booted out of office, but only by 232 votes out of 450. And even then the acting President vetoed it. So Russian is still an official language in Ukraine. This thread is already riddled with Kremlin propaganda. It's worth correcting some of the more blatant lies.

So in your view the secession of 2 million people from the Ukraine on the back of Russian military intervention wouldn't be getting much media attention if it weren't for the presence of right wingers in the new government?
