Not that listening to what Zbigniew B has to say is of any benefit to anyone outside the corridors of power. The man always shapes his opinions to what he believes that power wants to hear.

Yes but Zbigniew B book the "The Grand Chessboard" is still the cornerstone of US geopolitical strategy.

Probably makes more practical sense than that Alexander Dugin blokes scribblings, who I seriously doubt anyone in Russia takes seriously. Russian officers probably just like that 8 pointed star symbol because it looks scary.

Putin - Sean Pertwee
Obama - Ice Cube
Cameron - Reece Shearsmith

btw, Lyndon Larouche ( keen eurasianist ardent loon and murder cover-upper) appeared on the the second largest Russian tv station (state owned of course) on their 9 o' clock news yesterday to give his loon views on the question. His third such appearance in the last week.
Had no idea that looney was still alive & kicking.

RT have just broadcast footage there from the Maidan during the sniper killings of a car stopped by the crowd who are demanding it be searched. One of the coup leaders..cant remember his name..searches the car and inside theres a modern military sniper rifle, black carbon fibre type with large scope . Didnt look Russian, definitely not one of those Dragunov types. Its unzipped from a leather case . And then he puts it back in the case and the driver is simply let proceed by the politician who vouches for him . And off he drives with the sniper rifle .

fucking mad.

Most sniper units in the Russian military don't use SVDs (Dragunovs) exclusively anymore. They fit the rifle to the job, so carrying something that "didn't look Russian" indicates nothing except someone using a weapon appropriate to a job.
Bear in mind too, how popular game hunting is throughout Ukraine, Poland and Russia. Many hunters own rifles that might, to your eyes, look like a "modern military snipe rifle", especially as (unlike in the UK) they don't have a magazine-capacity limitation for hunting rifles, or a limit on how powerful your scope is.

Yeah, it's pretty different.

Well not really unless you think John McCain has any valuable input other than pushing pro-Washington propaganda. Isn't that the same thing Russian TV is using Lyndon Larouche for pushing anti-Washington propaganda, propaganda's the same no matter the background of the person spouting it. Another thing is Russia has a problem with finding pro-Russian, anti-American propagandists unlike the West to promote their foreign policy, they tend to fall into the category of the resident nut job libertarian conspiracy theorists like Lyndon Larouche. However, Lyndon Larouche maybe a barking mad but his relevantly sane compared to some of the nut jobs on US TV.

Part of propaganda is the standing of the person you're pushing it through or allowing to push that propaganda - McCain means something (whether you agree with his propaganda or its aims or not) - he speaks for a vocal and aggressive section of the US state foreign policy managers. Larouche means nothing (again, whether you agree with him or not) beyond that that those putting him on their news programs are desperate. There is no equivalence whatsoever and to argue that there is is to drop right into fantasy.

Oh, and look who we find there, loving and living the fantasy - hello camo!

Quite the opposite, a couple of fate-inches to the side and that could have been my childhood! I think it's a beautiful picture though and there is edge in it too but I'd rather this kid had a different life entirely. Kind of the point.

OK, fair enough. Your reading habits are still a bit 'far out' though.

Regarding Lyndon Larouche, his cult always has a stall on Friederichstrasse whenever I'm in Berlin.

There was also some TV evangelist who shared a jail cell with Larouche and claimed that he seemed to be linked into networks with a lot of inside information.

The Russians having inferior fire-power in the propaganda stakes does not mean it is not an artillery duel.

to add slightly to ViolentPanda's point, i think i'm right in saying that the majority of civilian rifles now sold look a lot more 'military' than the traditional wooden hunting rifles - they have synthetic furniture thats often black/grey/green, they often have picatinny rails for added extras - stick an entirely legal magazine on it and, viola, you have a 'military' sniping rifle.

have a brouse through this lot - all legal in the UK, so christ knows what you can buy in Ukraine... http://www.sportsmanguncentre.co.uk/category/Guns/Rifle_1/

can i have a Space Dragon?

speaking of which, i saw the most astonishing tattoo recently - a lad had got Dragon porn tattoo'd on his back. fucking marvellous it was.

But how many Russian's do you think know who he is? actually there not even many Westerners who know who he is. I would say outside of any Russian who studies international relations, or US foreign policy most Russian would have no fucking idea, quite the same way as the BBC putting Russian nut job to promote Western interests. His there to serve a purpose to promote Russian foreign policy and support Kremlin propaganda and for that reason in the eyes of the average Russian his just another political pundit promoting Russian interests.

One of the worlds greatest opportunist's.

Tbf any snipers on any side in ukraine are going to be using aks or dragnovs because theres millions of the things about.
So unless you have the actual weapons and a csi lab your proving nothing

Lots of hunting rifles chambered for .308 in Ukraine too. Perfect for intermediate range high-accuracy work, like killing a deer or a person.

Have you had a chance to look at that reported Olga Bogomolets interview in which she denied seeing any evidence of wounds or fatalities amongst the security services?

Are you still claiming it was Blackwater?

There are some claims that it's been established that the wounds were consistent with 7.62mm ammo being used.
The Devil is in the detail, though. The bullet (the bit that actually leaves the rifle when you fire it) for 7.62 x 54mm ammo cartridges (as used by Dragunov sniper rifles) is also used by any hunting rifle chambered for .308/7.62 x 51mm, so any claims as to who-shot-who on the basis of bullet wounds is a load of balls.

The difference being that some of us have a modicum of military experience, and may even have been "educated" by the military during a time when such weapons were prevalent.
You, on the other hand, have Google. :)
No question that having spent some time as an enlisted man will bring with it some knowledge of some aspects of some things military. On occasion, though, one runs across a Vet who holds forth on all aspects of military affairs past present and future, including strategy history logistics etc as if in possession of degrees from Sandhurst, Dartmouth, a stint at Andover and as a Regimental Sergeant Major; plus time spent as a member of the Parliamentary Defence Select Committee.

Not that there's anything wrong with that. :)

perhaps we just train our people better than you... ;)

I'm getting bored with you excellent information gathering/analysis (I hope some of you have gone to bed during this) so I'm going to forecast future events *rubs balls*:

There won't be a war.
Crimea will become part of Russia, but not other bits.
US, UK and EU will negotiate the above in some form of treaty and claim success.
Ukrainian economy will stagnate/tank.
Foreign investment will purchase (more of) Ukraine's assets, grain production, gas production.
Business as usual.
Timeframe 3 to 6 months.

If I'm correct you all owe me £1k each and by reading this post you agree to pay me.

I think you're right. The neo-cons have got their preferred Prime Minister and the USA will be able to recruit Ukraine into NATO. Russia has kept their Black Sea port. Merkel will be able to invite Ukraine into the EU eventually. The world will continue.

Apols if it's addressed earlier in the thread, I read 30 pages, but still catching up on the rest.

Does anyone know where the pro Russian militias came from? Are they just ethnic Russians who happened to have guns lying around, were they an organised vigilante- or crime?- group before the current turmoil? Had they been formed/armed etc by the Russian state in preparation for this sort of unrest? Intrigued as they appear to be armed, organised and in some cases uniformed, and to be following some sort of command structure (impression based in news stories that mention them in passing and twitter/Facebook updates- again, all mention them in passing)

I can see this happening, too. Plus the IMF will bail out the rest of Ukraine and insist on widespread cuts in public services and privatisation of state-owned resources.

Ukraine in NATO might be very touchy, though.
