Ukraine and the Russian invasion, 2022-25

Have we had this?

which has this:

That article reckons that according to various estimates the Russians have lost anywhere from 3000 up to 12000 men in 2 weeks of fighting, The US lost 3,500 in 8 years in Iraq. These are huge numbers there is no way that even the Russians can keep a lid on figures like these for very long. Too many families will have lost someone or know someone who has and the war has barely started.

Egypt, already under a severe economic regime involving cuts and removals of subsidies leading to new taxes and higher prices (all to satisfy the IMF for a loan), are heavily reliant on wheat imports from Ukraine and Russia. They've banned the export of wheat (and lentils, pasta, flour and fava beans). Prices are through the roof. And this will also affect poorer nations like Yemen. Grim.

Since the UN has been stymied by this crisis, dealing with the food supply issue is something they should really grab hold of.

and US population roughly double that of Russia

Sadly for the first time in my life I found myself agreeing with Tucker Carlson a few days ago, when he pointed to how many stories in our media about this war are very dubious, if not total lies. Obviously he is a toerag of the first order but the shame of him being right one time really struck me.

anything in particular about that piece?

2.3x the population of Russia to be precise.

Russia's population is smaller than many people realise. It's only 1.7x the size of Germany. Mexico and Japan are the most comparable in population size.

Still, to at least enact a twitch on today’s miserabilism dial, this twitter thread ( and the two previous to it from this same user) are well worth ten minutes of your time. Misallocation / misdirection of the FSB’s formidable resources may yet send the country spiralling into chaos as sanctions bite. The mid ranking officers & analysts are not happy.

Msybe good old Smokeandsteam is going to be proven right after all. I so hope he is.
Thank you. Long but extremely interesting.

anything in particular about that piece?

Mainly the source, and the lack of any check to see whether it is actually true or not. I mean we'd all laugh if the Metro did that with Russian claims too and published a headline of UKRAINE SPECIAL OPERATION: NAZIS KICKED PREGNANT MUMS-TO-BE OUT INTO COLD, THEN BLEW HOSPITAL UP THEMSELVES.

I try not to post without comment, but what is there to add to that which doesn't speak for itself?
Chernobyl

You've got Russia all Dewey eyed for the days of the CCCP and a Ukraine with a quite large irradiated bit that must contribute to having a different outlook

I want to laugh ...

But ... 😳

During the cold war, when it threatened to go hot, the Politburo instructed KGB to be on the look out for rising prices at Blood Banks. They thought blood banks were actual banks that bought and sold blood...

You'd be surprised (horrified actually) at the things enemies/adversaries get completely wrong about each other.

The headline is misleading clickbait...

'"As a result of the Russian invasion of Ukraine we have temporarily made allowances for forms of political expression that would normally violate our rules like violent speech such as 'death to the Russian invaders.' We still won't allow credible calls for violence against Russian civilians," a Meta spokesperson said in a statement.

The calls for the leaders' deaths will be allowed unless they contain other targets or have two indicators of credibility, such as the location or method, one email said,'

I presume it's because of the sheer volume of posts in the mentioned countries (i.e. Estonia, Latvia, Poland, etc) saying things like above are breaking AI driven moderation in those countries, which means that either they'd have to stop posts from those countries, and assocaited advertising revenue, or specifically exclude those things from AI moderation.

But is Meta in their Insta, or FB guises, really 'we'.

eta that's also quite specific so 'death to Putin' is ok, but 'lets kill Putin by breaking into his bunker in the Urals and forcefeeding him out of date sausage roles brought from a service station just outside Riga 4 years ago, and only recently found at the back of Edgars' shed' = FB banhammer.
