The stupidity of the anti-vaxx nutcases

nurse in Germany who shared anti-vaccine shite on social media was secretly swapping out doses for saline. meaning 9000 over-70s need to be given their shots again to be sure.
this isn't stupidity it's malice.
That's attempted murder, or possibly manslaughter. And certainly diminished responsibility.

SiL tells me that her part of the NHS is afflicted by a very small number of fairly vocal deniers / anti-vaxxers. Fortunately, they are not in clinical roles (as in administering drugs). And their colleagues tend to smack them down verbally if they start up with their nonsense.

Unknown client, hmmmm.... who could that possibly be?

That's one of the infuriating things about lots of the anti-vax stuff, that they're blissfully unaware they're in part being played by people and institutions.

Beeb has some more info ...

One of my proudly unvaccinated acquaintances has sent me this report which says the most vaccine hesitant group is people with PhDs as some sort of gotcha

As tho a degree made people intelligent. On that basis you'd think Harvard's dershowitz would be some sort of genius. But the evidence is otherwise

Oh yes totally beholding to the like/views economy/validation too.

The original paper is here: Time trends and factors related to COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy from January-May 2021 among US adults: Findings from a large-scale national survey There are graphs there show that although PhD are the most hesitant, Master Degree holders are the least. But it would be interesting to know why.
I've skimmed the paper and the authors are not sure either

Wendy C King et al said:
The large decrease in COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy January-May among those with ≤high school education went a long way towards narrowing the education gap; still this group has a relatively high hesitancy prevalence. Those with professional degrees (e.g., JD, MBA) and PhDs were the only education groups without a decrease in hesitancy, and by May, those with PhDs had the highest hesitancy. To our knowledge, no other study has evaluated education with this level of granularity, which was possible due to our unusually large sample size (>10,000 participants with PhDs). Further investigation into hesitancy among those with a PhD is warranted.

you should tell her that the "most vaccine hesitant group is people...who are currently dying the most of covid in the states." Nearly all COVID deaths in US are now among unvaccinated

There’s an awful lot of very clever people here at my work with long strings of letters after their names, but I wouldn’t trust most of them to tie a pair of shoes. It’s like all their allocated intelligence gets used up on one extremely specific subject, leaving fuck all left for anything else.

Yep they've been told all their lives that they're extremely clever and eventually come to believe it. In fact it's a very narrow intelligence, and their arrogance often negates any benefits of the actual intelligence. I learned early generally not to trust extremely clever people.

Hackney Council going to court tomorrow , applying to remove the anti-vax camp on Hackney Downs. Given the history of these folk (I think it's their 3rd camp , Shepherds Bush, Clapham Common before) expect another park to be used shortly.

The council could decide to spread some manure to fertilise the park.

If your sense of self comes from railing against an invisible enemy, it's very easy to just flat out invent stuff to get pissed off about. Conspiracy rabbit holes are littered with people jumping from one increasingly fantastic idea to another, the connection to reality diminishing with each hop.
There's a marvellous quote in the book about 4chan I've been looking over today, where the founder of 4chan describes his own site's userbase as being people who use the "reverse of Occam's razor".

Anyway, it sounds like there might be a fairly big showdown between LA antifa vs the LA antivaxxers today:

This lot being the freaks who recently maced a breast cancer patient while protesting a breast cancer clinic that requires visitors to wear masks, among other things. Made the mistake of going into the comments on an instagram post promoting the mobilization, some of the exchanges made me laugh a bit:
[antivax div]:
anti-fascists are acting like fascists. Upside down world.
[IGD]: Ah yes - the go to fascist move: mobilizing against the far-Right who have been attacking people across the city to further some stupid reactionary conspiracy theory that just helps to push everyone back to work while frontline workers and the most at risk keep dying.

Reports are that Proud Boys attacked counter protestors and reporters while police stood back.

Oops, shit, yeah, I forgot the 14th was yesterday. A reporter claiming it's the third time in the last five weeks someone's been stabbed in LA by Proud Boys. And reports that a Republican candidate for Governor drove the getaway car after a previous attack.

Actually if you watch the videos posted carefully the guy stabbed in long sleeved blue is a Proud Boy or anti mask guy with a skateboard.

There is an initial fight with the tram in the way with a guy with no mask knocked out and then the Proud Boy lot kinda counter attack. Jesus im glad we dont have to deal with such nutcases here (yet).

Think there must be at least two stabbings, this is the one that was being blamed on PBs/fascists. The stabber there doesn't have much in the way of identifying features, but he seems to be working together with a guy in a "protect the 2nd amendment" shirt. (eta: second video of the attack here, the stabber looks like he's wearing a shirt with an eagle design and something like "expect us" on the back. Warnings apply to both those links, they're pretty intense.)
