The Reform UK Party (latest nigel farage vehicle) is it to be laughed at or not

Farage and Widdecombe have had about 8 times the tv time across the board in the last 20 years

the normalisation has been massive .. help massive by the BBC just give Nigel a Puff Piece if he drops a dunce leaving a Wetherspoons on a Tuesday

and channel five Jeremey vine every day of the week has had a member of the brexit/reform party as a guest for at lease as long as the party existed

I suppose Widdecombe was a (junior) cabinet member back in the 90s, and then a shadow front-bencher. Lots of other people held similar or higher roles, it's true, but there is a narrative there, in her journey from the right-wing of the Tories to the complete insanity of today.

As for Farage, I have no answers as to why he's been given so much oxygen by the media, especially the BBC, for twenty years or so.

She was the prisons minister who did defend the shackling of female inmates in labour, and trenchantly argued for facilities like HMP Weare, a prison ship.

Inter alia she converted to Catholicism noisily in the 90s over the issue of the ordination of women priests (some people cared about these things back then). She's also an old fashioned homophobe and has consistently supported anti-gay legislation and opposed gay equality all the way back to the criminal repeal in 1967.

The guy who fits empathy to humans was off sick the day she was made. The sort of loathsome reactionary ultra-right bigot that I thought had been confined to grainy documentaries about the Major government, until recently.

Cunts like her are way more useful to him outside of the party. She can say what we’re all thinking, common sense etc and help fan the flames, but can also be conveniently distanced when she gets a bit too racist even for them.

Yeah definitely. Being the slightly more reasonable version of the far right is his whole thing really isn't it. Most obviously that's in relation to the Tommy Robinson types but goes for Katie Hopkins too.

The BNP tried to separate their "legitimate" political wing from the skinheads and footsoldiers, but they never managed to make the two sides of their coin truly distinct. There was a limit to how successful they could ever be because vast numbers of people (while quietly agreeing with the rhetoric) couldn't bring themselves to admit that they were the same as the violent racists.

That's what worries me about Reform. Their public face is businessmen in suits & ex-tory politicians, but whenever racist shit kicks off in the streets - "nothing to do with us, that was Robinson's lot, the EDL, Britain First..."

Keep calling them The Farage Riots, make it stick. It doesn't deal with the root cause of why so many people agree with the suited side of Reform, but it will keep people making the connection - vote for St Nige and you're standing with those who went out to commit arson on hotels with migrants in.

Hotels with people in them.

Anne Widdecombe made a huge point of converting to Catholicism because she was mad about women priests?! That's incredibly petty. And it's funny how people who are the most vocal about being Christians tend to be the kind of people JC would have hated.

I don't think that a major difference in theology is petty.

Really? It sounds like she ragequit. Admittedly I'm Jewish so I don't really understand it.
I am a born-again atheist, but my understanding is that some think that God has said that women cannot be priests, and that a church that accepts women as priests is acting contrary to the laws of God, and that women by their nature act as a sort of conduit between humans and God.

I wonder if that's why Widdecombe hates women so much. Also, I thought the thing about priests was St Paul?

I'm also an atheist, so i don't attempt to understand the theological arguments either way, but aware that it was / potentially is quite a big deal to some people - some C of E clergy, including a few bishops, also converted.

There are also C of E parishes which are still in the C of E but under alternative 'flying bishops' as they do not accept women priests.

If I remember Sunday school correctly, JC hates nobody no matter how horrible they might be.

Hatie Plopkins is not a 'cunt' or even an 'arsehole' , to suggest that implies she has warmth and depth ... she is slime
