Then, when a true scholar of Islam replies to you, you suspect him of being a Shi'a.

Some background to the ideas I've shared on here. They come from a growing movement, in the muslim world and beyond, who adhere to idea of The Perennial Philosophy. The belief that Primordial revelation & divine gnosis was adapted providentially to different circumstances in the form of religions. This is where the idea of a transcendent unity comes from.

Or as 12th Century Muslim scholar Ibn Arabi would say "If the believer understood the meaning of the saying 'the colour of the water is the colour of the receptacle', he would admit the validity of all beliefs and he would recognise God in every form and every object of faith." Ibn 'Arabi in Fusûs al-Hikam

A contemporary advocate is Gai Eaton whose book 'King of the castle' is a series of eight essay-like chapters which include society, economics, philosophical anthropology, and religion. The style is intense, dramatic, and ironic verging on sarcasm whenever modernity is addressed.

Other writers are Martin Lings, Frithjof Schuon, Rene Guenon ....



However, I'm sure no one here is remotely interested in any of the above. But it is a fascinating and fast growing development in the upper echelons of the Muslim world
