The Acolyte: A Star Wars Product

More likable than Obi Wan?

The cast in Andor just seemed half asleep, which is ironically how I felt trying to watch it.
Yes. Though to be fair my problems with Obi Wan were not to do with the cast.

And I was saying just yesterday that I was initially skeptic of this series because of general Jedi fatigue, but other than Indara, who gets offed in the first five minutes anyway , the Jedi masters/ apprentices that have featured in the first two episodes have been far more likeable than any I have seen in other recent series.

Ok - so far not bad at all.

The Wookie looks like Fleegle from the Banana Splits. What the fuck is going on with that?
Speaking of the Wookie, I have never even stepped foot on a single SW message board, and given how seriously the concept of canon is usually taken by sci-fi film/ TV franchises, I was left wondering whether that Wookie’s use of The Force is going to lead to thousands of SW nerds across the world arguing furiously online until well past their bedtime :D

Really? The second Jedi we meet uses his power to bully the mind of the Neimodian which seems absolutely antithetical to the Jedi code.

Watched both episodes. Great stuff; acting excellent, story intriguing, fight scenes on point, cheesiness present and correct. Playing heavily on the double-sided (balance!) stuff, even with the episode titles. Already really looking forward to the next one.

Not picking holes myself, just having a guess at the various reactions from the nerd brigade.

Meh. So far it seems more Ahsoka than Andor.
I doubt I am the target market though. The Mandolorian and Andor only really interested me in a handful of episodes.

My Disney sub runs out in two days and this won't be enough to keep me hanging on.

After a good sleep I've decided it wasn't really much cop afterall. It was ok TV space fodder, but not really better than an average star trek episode. It was better than Ashoka, but that's hardly a benchmark to aim for. If I was measuring Leslye Headland against her previous work with Russian Doll, then this doesn't amount to much does it? Does a another figure in black stood on a rock ligting up a sabre towards the sea intrigue? No. Is the mystery much of a mystery given half of it has already been solved in two episodes? No. Does wooden acting and cheesy dialogue have to be a part of Star Wars? No. The musical score was thin, the wookie looked weird, and female shrek is played by a terrible actor.

I liked the real puppets, and new species. Everything else felt off the shelf. 'I have a bad feeling about this' AGAIN! Matrix actors doing Matrix fighting? Why? Scene in a wild west astro-bar! check the box...tick tick tick....boom!

Yet, I did still enjoy it (a bit). I know it is not very good, but I do enjoy the experience of being in the Star Wars Universe. This just happens to be another part of the universe which is not that exciting. Why do they not ask one line actors to actually act? tech-buddy on space ship couldn't act, little kid at jedi temple couldn't act, security bloke at jedi temple couldn't act. Not Jet Li can't really act. Tight arse Padwan can't really act. If they can, they ain't showing it here.

Why is everything old and cobbled together? Why is it like the wild west again, when the Galactic Republic is supposedly thriving?

tbf if the most consistent aspect of star war aside from jedi and.light sabres.. is terrible fucking acting :)

As always, if you're watching Star Wars for acting chops I think you've got your priorities/expectations wrong :D

Even sleeping Kenny Everett Jedi was bad and he didn't have to do anything.

I guess I'd just like them to try a little bit...y'know, maybe do the scene a couple of times before just reading the lines out loud after they've started rolling.

It doesn't have to be. It's not ironic, or funny. It jars like Jar Jar!

then their is the writing of star wars

"I don't like sand. It's coarse and rough and irritating and it gets everywhere."

it all silly space wizards and Lazer swords .. let it be just what it is on the tin :)

You know that line gets a lot of flak, but it's bloody true!

That’s no excuse for shitty acting though
Well, it depends to some degree on both the genre in question, and how truly shitty the acting actually is. I haven’t observed acting so atrocious in this to actually diminish the overall enjoyment of a silly space opera, anymore than Mark Hamill’s performance was in A New Hope. Which from a purely objective standpoint, was awful at times and far worse than anything here so far. Not to mention the cringeworthy dialogue at times or the barely concealed contempt emanating through Alec Guinness’s disinterested performance. But in their right mind would give that a moment’s thought if a fan of the franchise?

Not saying this is or might be anywhere as good or iconic as the original trilogy- just pointing out the fallacy of judging such escapism cheesy sci-fi films or series on acting performances unless they are porn film-level atrocious across the main cast, which most definitely isn’t the case here.

I really liked it. It felt more lived in than other recent offerings, from set design (i loved the Neimodian cargo ship) to background creatures and so forth. It was refreshing to see a female lead character though at the same time I feel like the Disney take on female characters in Star Wars is far preferable to Lucasfilms anyway.

I felt that the way the Jedi were portrayed was interesting. They were still arrogant and somewhat supercilious but far less so than later on in the Star Wars timeline. I'd like to see that arc explored as well as the Sith.

Overall this was much better than i had hoped for. We've not seen anything from this early on in the Star Wars world and so far its been pitched just right. Though in the interests of full disclosure i should say that my thoughts need to be judged against the fact that I am one of those sad Star Wars nerds with no life, as alluded to by a couple of previous contributors. 😢

It's.... okaaay. I guess.

It feels a bit like a fan-made series with a huge budget though. Or like a second draft that really needed a few more iterations.
