tell me about eurostar

I am aware of this too, i have used the service weekly for nearly 3 years. The difference is not much, a pound and a few pence.

Anytime day single prices Gatwick to London
£19.90 Gatwick Express or Any Permitted
£16.20 to Victoria, not Gatwick Express (ie Southern only)
£10.20 to Blackfriars (ie Thameslink only)

More than a pound and a few pence.

What about return ? I also use a network card.

It's cheaper to go from Brighton with a day travelcard. There has been a big hike in those prices

Eurostar/Gatwick; the past year it has nearly always been considerably cheaper to buy a return Gatwick-Paris on Vueling than take Eurostar. Vueling only has a very early and late flight, so not so convenient, but if you have less than a week's notice it is hard to find a Eurostar return for under £200, mostly closer to the £300 mark, Vueling £118.50 all day long.

Yeah, but you've travelling from South of London. If it's very late and very early and you're traveling from Barnet or Northampton or Cambridge or something then getting to Gatwick is going to be way more expensive than getting to King's Cross unless you take the kind of route that requires an extra day off work.

Simon Calder here talking about the new London-Amsterdam service. It's kinda nuts though as it's only one way ? The other way you have to get out in Brussels for international embarkation etc

Calder, while being a train enthusiast, rightly points out in other articles that the problem with Eurostar is that it's a monopoly on one line. If there was competition prices would tumble. When are DB coming?

I too wish that DB would hurry up. But the date for introduction just gets pushed further and further into the future. At one point 2020 was suggested but they've since said that it's unlikely within the next 5 years.

London - Paris by air has long been the poor man’s option*

Just like you can catch a bus from London to Birmingham. Nobody *wants* to do it, but the option is there.

On the crazy end of the scale, would *anyone* fly to Lille? How much is that?

(* Tbf. Where it makes more sense, timing wise, is long haul with a Paris change of flights).

I think DB have given up - there were massive issues with SNCF (just for a change) , and there is a dire shortage of ICE sets of the kind needed to get to the UK , ironically the one that came over for the launch "Schwabbish Halle" (sic) was spotted by yours truly in Amsterdam CS last November.

The new Berlin to Munich HS line service is top of their agenda for the moment. A great shame.

The SNCF could in theory do more to "compete" with E* , but they are a major shareholder. So their superabundance of TGV sets basically lie idle in sidings for much of the time between important jobs like St E
Etienne to Paris.."the Glory of France" (not)

Do you think having the EU open access stuff forced upon France is going to make things any better? From what I understand, SNCF "issues" are one of the reasons chunnel freight constantly falters. I don't know if this is active resistance on their part or just a lack of enthusiasm to cooperate.

Both I suspect ......the quality of service on the freight division has ended in almost the end of it. Poor management / hostile trade unions / you name it. I have sat in some meetings over there and seen them in (non) action. a huge shame.

A little bump as I am aiming for a day trip to Paris soon and was wondering if there are any tips about how to get the cheapest fare?

I think book as early as possible is the best advice I can suggest. Also midweek cheaper than weekends. I went to Paris last week and the cost of flying was so much cheaper on Easyjet/Vueling. Obvs have to also weigh up the cost of traveling to/from the stations and airports, but still.

Amsterdam seems to be very reasonable from London on Eurostar. I've seen £49 fares available. Coming back always more expensive because of the change in Brussels.

The other day I was eyeing up Rotterdam, for Eurovision purposes, and looking to come back via ferry to Harwich. Just for something different, like. Don't know how much of an option that is from Amsterdam, though.

Yeah dead easy to do. All on the same train line.

The ferry from the hook to Harwich is a bit of a slog though, even the fast one.

Eurostar to Amsterdam stops in Rotterdam on the way.

As skyscraper101 says, book as early as you can. E* doesn’t work in quite the same way as flights, these days they just pull cheaper seats off sale as you get closer to departure and on the day before and day itself they only offer full fare in standard and standard premier, which is a pain for anyone with a discounted ticket who needs to move it by just an hour or so, will cost >£100, some times much more...

Lots of £29 fares around at the moment but might be more like January. Check in the early part of December. I want to go for a few days but I am brassic so it's going to have to wait.

Also probably travel during the week and don't travel on Monday morning or Friday evening obviously.

I've found £29 fares but the train leaves about 05.00. I think I might be able to get £39 for a 7ish train. Hoping to do a same day return, for an exhibition, in December.

It doesn't often work out but it's worth checking if there are any cheaper fares to Lille, then get separate ticket from there to paris. This works better for more distant destinations though.

What a nightmare Eurostar are turning out to be!
Got my tickets booked, fine. 22 December I found out I had to change them for next day. I expected to pay an admin fee of maybe £50 per ticket.
They want an extortionate £250 PER TICKET :mad: just unbelievable. I wrote in on 22nd Dec. i had a standard response, nothing more.
I rang them today and they are not varying from that. I said I could get a few return flights to Paris for that, how can they justify it?
Anyway, They have promised me a manager will telephone me in the next 24 hours.

When are you travelling? Dates/times. PM me if you wish. They are cancelling loads of trains due to strikes and offering people even on non-cancelled trains the chance to change for free...
