About the 20mph speed limit in Wales built up areas? Which goes live tonight..

Interesting bit of investigative reportage here. There are 4 anti 20 mph Facebook groups covering Wales and, up until very recently the admins for these groups were conservative politicians based in England who also on their own turf are actually pro 20 mph:

Anyone with half an ounce of sense would have kept the old speed limit signs in a lock-up, as it should have been obvious to any fule that most of them would be getting reinstated.

Just sentence the fucking carrots who thought this was a good idea to community service. Make them swap them back.

Slightly off piste I know; nearly every road in Wandsworth now has a 20 limit. There is only one road I can think off that hasn't been changed yet is part of the A214.

Drove through a 20mph zone in Exeter yesterday. Felt the right speed for driving down roads with pedestrian crossings, speed bumps, lots of parked cars to be honest

Really should be 20mph for every residential area nationwide. Might stick to 20mph for the future in residential areas myself

Don't. You will be run into from behind.

Irrespective of the speed limit, the safe speed is the traffic flow speed. Driving more slowly or more quickly than the flow speed raises your risk of having a collision. Note that I don't say 'accident', few collisions or other adverse events are accidental. Skidding on spilled diesel and going off the road is an accident. Hitting a sheep whilst doing 90 in a 60 zone isn't.

This is terrible advice. If the traffic flow is greater than the speed limit, you go at the speed limit. Otherwise you can get done for speeding.

The correct speed to drive at is one that is the speed limit and/or one that is safe for the conditions. If the road is narrow with lots of parked cars on either side and a school is just turning out 30 might not be advisable even if that is the allowed limit.

No - it is one that is safe for the conditions up to the speed limit.

Try talking to your insuror about this and claiming that you weren’t at fault for running into a car doing 20 in a 30 zone.

( good luck )

You are really going to drive down a narrow street with children coming out of school at 30mph, come what may?The speed limit is the maximum allowed speed limit. It's not a target or a challenge.
