TfL bringing 20mph limit to many major London roads

Construction is all in metric, so I think in metric completely. '"Human scaled" is just another way of saying "it's what I'm used to"

Yep. Tell a French person your height in feet and inches and they will mentally convert to centimetres to get a feel for how tall you are.

Imperial measures persist out of inertia plus a dose of tory-style aversion to any change that smacks of modernity and a splash of xenophobia because metric was a French idea. No surprise it is thanks to a Tory that we still have miles.

I think exclusively in SI units. If I'm gonna get there in three quarters of an hour, I insist on describing it as 2,700 seconds. Because scale is irrelevant to how easy numbers are to comprehend right?

Of course it's not. Maybe for someone who does numbers for a living but for the ordinary person, absolutely feet and inches are inherently easier to grasp for human-scaled things.

Cricket has been craving metrication all along. 22 yards is almost exactly 20 metres.

See? This is what would happen if we let standards slip to the extent that you're proposing.

How the fuck can something be almost exact?

20 meters is 11 centimeters shorter than 22 yards. This could be the difference between winning and losing a match.

Since I found out I was 1cm taller than Little Tommy Cruise I've taken to giving my height in centimetres

There's another thing. If someone tells you they're 182 centimeters tall, can you picture their height?

No.

But if they say they're 6 foot, you immediately envisage a tallish person.

This alone carries the day.

People are getting taller. Six foot is no longer the benchmark for impressive height. The forward-thinking French have already allowed for this by establishing the 2 metre threshold.

I'm not getting taller :(

Unless you compare me to my dad, who is now shrinking.

They've already done some shit like that and called it "The Hundred" 😤

Look at this shit ...

FUCK. OFF!

This is what happens when you kowtow to The French.

I have been out of London a bit recently/ it did spook me initially going back to 30mph limits on residential streets . Seemed far too fast

20 mph is still way too dangerous. Cars need to have their engines removed and holes cut in the floorpan so that occupants can stick their feet out of the bottom a la Flintstones. This would mean that cars could only move if they have full occupancy and for extra safety the occupants would all have to moonwalk - no jogging allowed.

Outside of Holland being two metres tall is very rare. I'm just under and I see people taller than me maybe a couple of times a year.

I was looking at an American RFI the other day.
"65 pound payload at 6 feet distance. So we can pick up a 155mm artillery shell."

I checked.

155mm shells weigh over 100lbs.

They really need to move on.

When I watch americans build things on youtube, the only time I get jealous is when they do some simple fractions. Base 12 is superior for mental arithmetic (actually base 6 is even better) but as soon as they have to do slightly more complicated maths like area or volume (or god forbid density or pressure) then I remain very glad our units match our counting system.

Your link's summary of base 14: 'not worth even considering'. But someone considered it. And thought it was a fine idea to use it for pounds and stones. :D

The car I drive for work has a speed limiter which can be set and it tells you the speed limit on the dashboard, therefore, yes, the car industry can very much do this. The problem isn't technical, it's political. Can you imaginable the levels of outrage among the Daily Mail types if this happened?
Here is another example that I found while at work last night with the new electric car showing one speed and the road sign another

I can visualise both quite happily. However when it comes to weight I can only do kg I just don't get stone and imperial cooking measurements baffle me, I have no idea how many oz in a lb. I'm in my mid 30s, I was basically taught metric for anything that wasn't travel distance which is miles and fractions of a mile although I I have no idea how many feet or yards there are in a mile. Once I'd drop to those distances I think in meters.

16 Oz in a lb?
