About the 20mph speed limit in Wales built up areas? Which goes live tonight..

I don’t see the connection between the NHS and a 20mph limit except for reducing RTA injuries which will surely help NHS backlogs?

When a Tory says “our NHS” they mean they believe it is theirs to sell or privatise

People like the NHS overall so it gets trotted out for a lot of things as a comparison. Eg the brexit bus.
Also turns what should be a wide approach to trying to make absolutely everything better into x thing versus the NHS

It's the Tories grasping at straws and bringing the 20mph culture war buffoons under its wing, some who say they are "politically homeless"
and yes what newme says, easy to trott out

this despite the Tories being all for 20mph when it was first suggested

FFS, can they not amend existing timetables

Think of all the Welsh transport planners sitting round a table looking seriously at each other:

"Restricting buses to 20mph is going to increase journey times"

.... "we didn't think of that, did we?" :hmm:

Far more bus services lost since 2010 due to austerity, but let's use a current culture war bugbear. All these people suddenly so fucking concerned about the state of the NHS and bus routes, ask your good pals in Westminster about where Wales' HS2 transport money and NHS payrise funding is, for a start.....

"If you get 12 points, you're looking at a six-month ban under the totting up scheme," he said."
That's 4 offences. I imagine the average driver is a little more careful after their first offence, yet alone second or third.
Ex police as well 🤔

I’m sure I heard something about how, if anything, reducing traffic speeds make journeys faster.

Not that I could get my head round the physics of it. 🤔

Bloke's an idiot. They're still knee-jerking in Wales. When they realise how few people actually get busted it'll all blow over.

Local Tory's are campaigning about a short stretch of road towards the power station. All other reductions to 20moh in the area have blown over.

More about regulating it than reducing it per se, to reduce bottlenecks. It's the theory behind variable speed limits on motorways, and can work in heavy traffic.

Ah, right. I don’t think anyone got the memo about who was meant to leave their house a bit later. That would have helped.

Been poking around South Wales the past few days, most people seem to be below 25mph in the 20 zones, on the main roads the 20 zone is only through a village, so generally 1/2 mile and it’s back to 60, not really a biggie. Didn’t see any speed cameras at all so it could be ignored, but as such a tiny distance it seems churlish to ignore it.

Same here in London with Mayor Khan being blamed by tory voters for creating the congestion charge and low emission zones. It was actually under consideration, planned and announced by Boris Johnson when he was mayor back in 2014. To this day labour and Khan are still being held responsible for it's inception.

A bit misleading, that. The congestion charge was introduced by Ken Livingston (hence the “Kengestion Charge”) His plan was to expand it out further than just the Central London area but he lost the 2008 election to Boris, who scrapped the extension.

The Low Emission Zone was a Tory policy but was only originally planned for the area within the North and South Circular roads. The shit that Khan is getting now is for the ULEZ expansion, which expands it to ALL London boroughs, many of which don’t have the same pollution problems as the central zone. It’s still a political thing though with biggest issue being that Khan has spent 200 million on a scrappage scheme that some argue was unnecessary, and some Tory councils in Greater London are making the new charge difficult to enforce. Barnet (I think) has instructed it’s traffic wardens to issue parking tickets to incorrectly parked ULEZ enforcement vehicles (which is most of them, given that they’re usually set-up in lay-bys and on grass verges!)

Seen these signs all around my part of town, usually on bus stops / BT cabinets - they were put up during the Covid year of 2020 I think, the theory being slower driving means fewer people injured in accidents and less strain on NHS (there’s another sign that I forgot to photograph which explicitly mentions base NHS use).

Not a bad idea really though I’m not sure if many people pay attention to them tbh
