I expect that this is going to get very nasty, as cat5 hurricanes go it is a big one - Thankfully, quite a few have already evacuated. Torrential rain on fairly fresh volcanic ash will produce mudflows as well as flooding.

Indeed. A telling sign will be whether Mexico calls for urgent international help. They're a country at a midway point who possibly might be able to cope with their own emergency services.
