I spent hours looking online but couldn't find anything I liked, so I made some placemats to protect the table surface. I cut them from a sheet of hardwood veneered plywood, stained and lacquered them and glued felt to the bottoms... And I don't think I like them  :D

This is the problem with having a table that you really like, you start caring about it getting scratched and stained and stuff and find yourself making things like this  .
My DIY coasters :
They stick to the bottom of hot mugs because of something to do with the varnish, its really annoying.

I think they look at odds with the table, myself - if you didn't want them though you could probably flog them on ebay or similar - they are lovely place mats - just not with that table.

(I'd go with something in a contrasting material)

Some dark grey paint or black laquer might sort it.
They're a decent size and the felt backing is a great idea.

Old wooden tables are supposed to be a bit bashed up.

It's stupid to try and make them perfect and then put additional things on top of them to protect them. The additional things will never protect it completely, and cover up the thing that you wanted to be perfect and look at.

It's almost as bad as people who don't take the protective film off electronic devices.

Well the worst is this really.

I was going to look for a large tree to cut rings from but from past experience they tend to crack.

I like your placemats and I love your table but the combination of placemats with table is a clash of wood grains that doesn't work for me. I know that it will devastate you to find this out.

This/these.

Honestly if I had that table I wouldn't be pairing wood with it for place mats, I would go for a dark leather (or easily cleanable faux leather) OR if you want something more modern, brushed stainless steel (or something that looks that way) with cork backing.

Leather was my first choice, but something lighter. I spent too long looking but I'll probably end up back there.

yes, they do crack, as well as sticking to your mug.

I'm not doing placemats, too big and annoying & would hide my beauteous table, if messy food is happening i just chuck a bit of linen on the table then wash it after.

Yep. Table cloths are my go to. I've an old pine table and it always has a cloth on it.
And there's a walnut table here that has a table cover made of rubber and felt and a cloth over that.
