I have recently got round to investing in a better chair for the work-from-home desk - i went for the humanscale freedom, albeit second-paw / refurbished for less than 200 quid (new is getting towards a grand) - i had a similar chair at a previous job so didn't need to test drive it.

someone recommended the aeron thingy in a thread about chairs, but it looks complicated...

newme I bought a second hand aeron 10-15 years ago. Still going strong. Had a few minor spares to buy on the way but they were just down to normal wear and tear.
If it ever gave up completely (god knows how) I’d buy another in a heartbeat

Yeh mine was second hand so likely out of warranty before i got it then ive had it 6 years now. Also not really the right size as I need the C. Looking at the very limited second hand ones I can see they are looking at over £600 for a refurb and ive been looking for months. This one needs a full rebuild and would be cheaper to buy another B than fix it myself. With the discount the new one was £1000 with a 12 year warranty. It's the sensible decision long term but just a staggering amount of money to drop just like that. Is my birthday soon tho so I'm considering it as that too.

So I got some sisal and jute carpet samples and showed them to the cat who leapt on them with glee. So that's out then.

Maybe engineered wood flooring? I'm not against carpet in theory but the thought of trying to pick a neutral but aesthetically pleasing colour...

I'd agree, 1k for a chair seems OTT. I was considering these chairs second-hand but in the end paid £300 for a leather (soz) chair from Ikea with a 10-year guarantee and it's been almost perfect so far. Almost, because it doesn't "lock" in the reclined position, which is somewhat of a flaw. But a minor one. I'd pay the same amount for a second-hand fancy chair but not more than that, and my feeling is I might not need to buy another chair ever.

Have you pondered this new-fangled vinyl flooring RubyToogood ? I mention it because a friend has some and it seems to be super hard-wearing, she has two cats, one dog and a large number of rabbits (she takes in bunnies when their people are away) so it gets a lot of clawed critters walking (and zooming) around on it without any damage. There's no purchase for cats to actively sharpen their claws on it and it's quite warm to walk on in bare feet.

 made me think of a time when I was younger and more naive and spent years looking for a tiny sofa that would fit in a window bay.

I thought I had finally found the one - small, wicker, reasonably priced and I was optimistic it would go in the back of my car.

Then on the way to the checkout I suddenly had a vision of my cat Cindy's face when I brought home what she would see as a giant sofa-shaped scratching post.

(The fact that Cindy actually had a scratching post was neither here nor there).

Can't disagree, my back does tho. This is beyond economical repair and was the wrong size to begin with based on budgeting and buying refurb. It's lasted 6 years and is wrecked. At more then half price of a new one with a 12 year warranty. Assuming it lasts the same 6 years that's a saving of hundreds and a warranty the whole time. I baulked at 370 for it 6 years ago. Now I sink in meetings and it doesn't support much

Feeling bad enough about it already.

Oh, you can swap the gas lift easily enough. I did mine recently. £30 or so off eBay for a (possibly better) compatible one.
I also bought a new lumbar support for similar.

I desperately need new floor coverings. I've looked at the advanced vinyl/LVT stuff that izz referred to and it does look excellent, albeit a bit pricey for me. But it's supposed to be very hardwearing and looks good, so if you have the budget for it then I'd say it would be worth a look.

Personally, after the pissplosion that my darling Jakey has brought to our flooring in the last 6 months with his stage 4 CKD, UTIs, and general urinary incontinence, I'm getting carpet tiles next time. Hobnail pile carpet tiles are a good match for homes with pets (and their claws) as opposed to loop pile, it's cheap, it's very easy to fit, and if a carpet tile has something catastrophic happen on it you can just pull it up, give it a thorough clean, and hang it up to dry before putting it back (or replace it if need be).

It's the gas lift, both arms, the sort of floating support arms snapped off the seat pan entirely damaging that and the seat and part of the plastic housing at the bottom has also snapped off due to forward tilt being unrestricted once the back snapped off. Lumbar broke 3 times til I gave up on them.

That could be describing my physical problems tbh :D

This is the bamboo flooring I put down in my new house. I wanted something warmer and I like its yellowness. I've put a filter on to get the colour right so everything else looks a bit bright. It was a faff to get done (it has a layer of insulation underneath) and I actually think carpet would have been fine...

And this is LVT from the garage conversion in my old house, survived Airbnb guests and filthy lodgers and warm underfoot:

I love everything about this room, gorgeous.
I might have to rethink my position on the colour pink, because that hot fuchsia thing going on just as a highlight looks lovely against the more neutral and cooler colour elements.
