I’ve had this garden bench for 35 years. What it really needed was new hardwood slats, but the internet said £120+, so I gave it a bit of a service instead.

Cutting a shelving unit diwn in size to fit it in a new location.

Combined with the tidying of the area the shelving is located.

Once again the cheif engineer on the job is my aunt.

Took a bit of today too as it didn't fit yesterday. Had to trim the edge of all the shelves to get it in.

Looks great now.

Finally got round to installing solar thermal panel I've had for 18 months. Hot water tank hasn't dropped below 50°C since.

These came free from a recycling centre. A brush, sand and oiling did the rest. Still astonished that anyone could dump them but, their loss, my and my garden's beautiful gain.

Just managed to make some temporary* cardboard box book shelves for the half landing on the stairs.


* It may be some time before we ever get up the courage to buy wood and figure out how to make proper shelves.
Unless this lot collapse on us, as there is nothing securing them to the wall...

I love this! Had you not mentioned it was boxes, I don't think I'd have seen them in the main pic. Possibly unstable long term but most definitely clever and inventive short term!

The trouble with all the IKEA bookcases is they are too deep or too tall to fit on the small half landing on the stairs. We need something only B format paperback deep to leave plenty of space for going up and down stairs.

We have books in almost every room incl these in the kitchen:

Bought these LED lights, £5 in Ikea.



It has brightened up the drinks cabinet / storage thingy and gives me some lowkey lighting in the living room which doesn’t reflect back on the TV.

They’re very simple to use as power off a usb charger (not included - but Ikea do sell a 3x USB plug) and are adhesive so stick on your surface of choice. Some incredibly fiddly clips are included to help direct the strips
