I'd like to know what shitposting is. I thought it was posting shit, until I found out the BBC thought it was something else but were wrong.

We all run the risk of doing a BBC in trying to explain it, but I'll try: something approaching a human 'denial of service' attack whereby you post a high volume of nonsense to disrupt some form of discourse. I'm sure you can think of a few former U75 posters.
So it kind of is posting shit, but the aim is important. Kind of like how the media also redefined 'trolling' to remove at least one essential ingredient, motivation.

I think there are different people doing different things. Some are just churning out shite, others are just doing satire (of a sort) which the media and politicians are completely bemused by because for once it's not them/their class that's making the joke. Bit like what Chris Morris said in a recent interview - a lot of satire is just people mocking the court while being part of it (or something like that).

It's a really old term, I saw it on forums way before social media, back to the early 2000s at least. No solid definition of course, I've seen it used to just mean posting shit but it seems to usually refer to low-effort/high volume ironic/sarcastic posts, memes, trolling, posts about hypnotizing dogs, etc.

Shitposting is just posting shit though, it is intentionally disruptive but nothing so grand as a conspiracy to disrupt the discourse or whatever. Well it can be but it isn't as narrow as that. It's just taking the piss, but online.

It's not merely taking the piss, that's a much bigger sphere in which it might sit. Ninjaboy is a decent example of shitposting from this site's history. It's nothing as complex as conspiracy but it's done to disrupt.
