Season 1 often just sets the trend and lets the actors get used to the roles etc.

Firefly had good potential for it's first run.

Tell me about it, after being in asia mostly teaching alongside North Americans, I now say 'grade' instead of 'year'.

I can trump that. Michael Ansara, who played Elric the Technomage in Babylon 5, was a Klingon captain in the original 60s Star Trek. He reprised the role in Deep Space Nine.
