What's the train journey like?

One direct or changing & then schlep from station to bunk house?

I don't mind driving & 1 other person (I have a mini so can't see anyone wanting to do such a long journey in the back, but if you want to you're welcome). I am West, west London ont M4 practically too.

Well there's a number of ways to do it. The train leaves from Euston and arrives in Welshpool... The bunkhouses are 1.9 miles from Welshpool train station.... so for those of us bikes it would be easy.. but Colinette is about 11 miles from the bunkhouses...which would be a nice bike ride (if the weather is good)... don't know how far we would want to go for walks/train rides on the steam train etc.. but I reckon we would be able to work it out... I don't know what people want to do whilst we're there... it'd be good if there were some suggestions for walks/activities... or we can just play it by ear when we get there:

Outward journey
Friday 30 September 2005

Depart 16:40 17:18 18:40 19:10
Arrive 20:14 20:14 22:22 22:22
Changes 1 2 1 2
Duration 3:34 2:56 3:42 3:12

(edited to add.. sorry I did format these but the software seems to override the spaces I put in.. but it takes between 2:56 hours and 3:34 hours with 1 or 2 changes going from Euston to Welshpool.... check National Rail Enquiries for exact details.)

From the bunkhouse:

"I have provisionally booked the 11 bed bunkhouse for the weekend of 30th Sept - 2nd Oct Please confirm with exact numbers and any other requirements by 1st Sept.Llanfair Caereinion (Colinette) is about 11 miles from us - a 15 min drive."

So far there are 9 of us, so we're sorted for accommodation. (They also have another 9 bed bunkhouse if numbers get any bigger)... but anyone else who is umming and ahhing about coming should bear in mind that we need to confirm by Sept. 1st. :)

I've not been here for ages but have only just seen this! I'd love to come if there's still a space - please count me in and if money etc is needed upfront please mail easy g and I'll send some along. I'm not good enough on a bike to ride on the road tho so I'll have to come up with a cunning plan. :)

Lollybelle... don't worry, there are also plans for cars and there's also train/cab combination... so we'll sort something out. Good that you're up for it!! :)

I'll drive, me & ickle luke cherry (mini cooper, rover) can take a couple of peeps too . . . I live in West Drayton, just north of Heathrow. No CD player in car & gobshite of a driver, so anyone's welcome to take there chances . . . :D

sorry, Lolly says she can't make it...hope that doesn't screw things up too much for you..

hiya - has anyone booked train tickets for this yet?
(just cos it'd be nice to go down on the same train, innit!)

xx

There are two spaces available in our car. It might be a good idea to investigate car hire, as well -- probably cheaper.

Right.. just looked on the trainline.com

We could go down on the 17:18 train on the Friday night which would arrive at WElshpool at 2014pm which is great timing, but a return would cost at least £43.40

However, if we are willing to take the later train leaving London at 19:10 and arriving at 22:22 and return on the 16:59 train on the Sunday arriving London at 20:57 we can get them for £9 each way... which is what I'll do I think... we could have a stitch and bitch on the train!! (For £19 return each)

I'm going to book two tickets now for Koobz and I... but we won't all get to sit together if I do that.. so I could buy 4 tickets so that two more can come with us. At current numbers that leaves5 extra people and two cars (bear in mind that Dimple's car is a mini)..

What do you think? I'll pm everyone too.. these tickets fly, so best to do it today if poss!

Ok... I've gotten four tickets (GG, Kublai, PieEye, Eme) at £19 each. PieEye and Eme will you be taking bikes?.. cos I'll call the train companies to sort that out too!

Journey 1: London Euston to Welshpool 30/09/2005 Depart 19:10

Choc.. the accommodation is a dorm room which I have already reserved. I have to confirm our reservation by September 1st, so when I get back from Devon next week (from the 20th) I will be calling them again. It's the 11 bed dorm here: http://www.severnbunkhouse.co.uk/bunkhouse.htm

Also nearer the time we can consider whether we want to cook for ourselves at the bunkhouse or go out for dinner, or a combo of both (ie split over lunch and dinner - not two dinners one in the bunkhouse and one in the pub.. :D )

It's great that you're on the same train.. if you want I can give you my booking reference number so you can call Virgin etc and see if they'll put your seat with our seats so you're not all alone!

woohooo! thanks gg... :)
If I take my bike it folds up nicely so can go in the luggage bit, no hassle.. (trialed this w/end!) S&B on the train = great idea... yay!!!

hey gaijingirl - can you give me the booking reference too? £19 is so much cheaper than I thought it would be! And it would be nice to sit near you all if possible.

I was thinking of you and your fold up bike... that's so cool!!

The bunkhouse is really close to the train station, but Colinette is about 11 miles away so we'll have a nice (hopefully not rainy) cycle to the shop on the Saturday! If it does end up raining I expect we can book a cab to take anyone who does not fit into any of the cars already with our party... :)

Of course.. but there are spare places in Ms T and Dimple's cars going too!

The ref no is RBG5H5HG and I booked through the Trainline.com whose tel no is: 0870 010 1296

If any of you do manage to rearrange seats it would be great if you could get them to give us tables on either side of the corridor.. then we could really spread out with our bottles..... erm.. I mean yarn!! :D

I know... I just don't want to have to depend on a car driver, in case they have to cancel. All this talk of train S'n'B and bottles isn't helping, either!

ok... well I just called The trainline to book the bikes and they said.. "you should have booked at the same time as the tickets".. when I pointed out that there was no option through their online ticket sales process to book for bicycles, they told me to get in touch with web support. I can't really make phone calls from work, so I've emailed them and hope to get a response soon....

... t'would be so much easier if we all had natty folding bikes!! I wish I had one... :(

With current numbers there are 4 people not taking the train: Dimples, Acechick, Ms T and Hendo, so you guys would fit in one car - which works out quite nicely!

rrrrrrrrrRight... so we know where we're staying and we know we're going to Colinette on the Saturday (morning?). As for the rest of the weekend, I was hoping for a bit of input...

Do we

A) make it up as we go along

or

B) come up with some kind of schedule....

Things to do include:

Powis castle is nearby:

powis_castle_and_garden.jpg

And there is a lovely looking steam train too:

Apparently.. "you may even get the chance to ride on Thomas the Tank Engine or one of his friends"... :D

Obviously there are walks we could do. Apparently (according to this website, the following national walking trails run through Welshpool.

"Welshpool is fortunate in having two National Trails within close proximity of the Town; Offa's Dyke path runs to the East and the historically significant Glyndwr's Way completes its 132 mile trek in Welshpool. The Ann Griffiths Walk, used together with Glyndwr's Way, makes for an excellent looped walk weaving though the stunning Vyrnwy Valley. "

In fact this seems to be a good place to start for activities:

http://www.welshpool.org/welshpool.html

I guess it depends how much walking etc we want to do...

We could do:

Saturday

Colinette in the morning
Back to bunkhouse for lunch/bring packed lunch with us if time is tight.
Then either:
1. Have a look round the town's "heritage trail" (cheap option)
2. Do some stitching and bitching on the 14:15 steam train from Welshpool- Llanfair returning to Welshpool at 16:35 (£9 return)
3. Go to Powis Castle (£8.80)

And end up in a pub for dinner and the duration...

Sunday

Do a long walk with a packed lunch in the middle before a last pub stop before getting the train/in the car home in the evening.

The bunkhouse is in Welshpool about 1 mile from the train station here. Colinette is about 11 miles from the bunkhouse.

The packed lunch thing would mean that we'd have to come up with a kitty and prevail upon the car drivers to pick up food for sangers etc en route. There's a kitchen in the bunkhouse so we can easily put some sandwiches together and maybe do brekkie too - in that way saving money for a good dinner and drinks on the Saturday night.

Anyway, these are really just suggestions and it'd be great if you guys had some ideas to throw into the pot!
