Rugby Union 2014-15

Teaboy

It definitely looks brighter over there..
So a new season is upon us and its culminating in a World Cup so it should be an interesting one. What are your hopes for both domestic and international?

On the club front I'd be happy if we (Richmond) get a top five finish. We started very badly last season primarily due to injuries but finished very well, if we can keep some consistency over the season (including when the ground gets heavy in winter) then I see no reason why we can't have a good season. Three out of three is a good start although we were lucky against Esher, mainly thanks to the ref. I don't think promotion would be a good thing.

Internationally I think England look in a strong position and I'm optimistic that we should be peaking at the right time, we do need a strong Autumn and 6N though, we really need to win the latter. Assuming we have a good 6N then I think we have to be third favourites for the WC behind NZ and SA, I think strength in depth and home advantage places us above Ireland and Wales.

On a separate note I thought a lot of last season was disrupted by the reffing and so far this season seems to be worse. In the 3 games I've seen live the refs have been handing out yellow cards like a football match often for minor / accidental things, I think its a worry.

After watching Bath last Saturday all I can say is if they keep that momentum up we'll be singing at the end of the season. Awesome performance - George Ford demolished Freddie Burns in the battle of the fly halfs, and Rokoduguni played a blinder. In fact pretty much everyone had a game and a half!

However, been there before. Fingers crossed though:facepalm: and looking forward to seeing how Sam Burgess fits in when he gets here.

Good start fellas.

Any side that puts 45 points on the Tiggers has my support.....

Just found out that Parling is being observed for repeated concussions, may have to quit the game. Shame for a great player, all the best to him. Tom Youngs out of the Autumn inters after shoulder surgery.

How many of those 4 are we going to win? Got to be 3.....

Ulster seem to off to a good start so hopefully for a better year than last. We have Kiss in for Anscombe, but he's off soon. As a hope, I'd really like to see Stuart Olding have a good season and be in contention for the Irish 12 shirt at the WC. Hope Connacht keep up their good form (beating Leinster 10-9 was a good show, a Leinster freefall?)

Haven't paid any attention the RCC build up, but will watch some of it this weekend.

Internationally, I'd like to see how we cope with the loss of O'Driscoll, and John Plumtree (forwards coach) and if we can build on the good showing in last years 6 nations.

Am looking for a team in SE London to follow any suggestions?

So England have given Lancaster a new long-term contract. Great news for forward planning but its going to look very stupid if we end up stinking the WC out again.

Very true. There would have been little lost in delaying the contracts until after the WC. Maybe shaking up the coaching team from time to time is a good thing, too.

So any Wasps fans here?

If I was a fan I'd be seriously unimpressed, High Wycombe was bad enough but Coventry is a proper trek, too far in fact. You can sort of see where the club is coming from, they've got a modern and big stadium on the cheap and a chance to put down some roots and grow the local support in a big city where they have less local competition.

The club has probably looked at what London Irish have done in Reading and what Welsh are trying to do in Oxford; however I think both those examples are very different. Reading is not far from London and has good road and rail connections (under 30 minutes from Paddington), also the town has historically had a prominent Irish community or though that is less visible these days. As for Welsh they need both a stadium and a new fan base if they are to stay in the top tier their existing fan base was simply not big enough, you can see why Oxford was a tempting city to choose. How successful it has been remains to be seen.

Wasps already have a large fan base, large enough to survive, to my mind they should have been building on this rather than risking it all. Surely they could have gone down the same route as Quins and Sarries? They must have been able to build a small stadium in the greater London area?

It seems like a good thing for the city of Coventry as they've offloaded the Ricoh and looked to secure the long term home for the football club, but if this goes ahead (and it seems like a done deal) I think Wasps will be playing in front of very small crowds for the foreseeable.

This seems like the rugby equivalant of Wimbledon moving to MK.

Heartening to see that even though Muhnner are now a busted flush they're still treated like royalty by refs and seemingly allowed to cheat without let or hindrance.

It's comforting to know that in this new age of English-led cutthroat capitalism in rugby there's still space for old, corrupt traditions such as waving Munster through at home.

High time somebody did something about this, really.

Fucking choke tackle - in what barking parallel universe is this legal? Holding someone by the neck, which of course is below the shoulders.

And O'Connor only got three weeks for it, rugby is fucked. Shit like this has to be taken more seriously, especially if we want more kids playing the game.

Bloody hell bendeus, I start the thread off with a post of hopes and wishes and your first two posts are moans, I know what you are saying but at the moment you are doing a mighty fine impression of a man who has fallen out of love with the game.

I really, really have. Barely watched any games this season, can barely raise interest for the AIs. The blazers have done their best to wreck the game I love and I just can't be bothered

My BiL & nephew are season ticket holders at the Rec. They certainly enjoyed that day. I hope to join them for at least one game this season.

My hometown club GHA got off to a flyer in Scottish National League winning 5 in a row but came a cropper last week against Jed-Forest.

Glasgow looking good up until friday in the Pro12.

And the O's v Treviso game is pretty much over at half time, not sure what future the Italian teams have in the Pro 12. Maybe they would be better off starting their own semi-pro league?

Wales squad announced, and no Adam.

Backs L Williams (Scarlets), L Halfpenny (Toulon), T Prydie (Newport Gwent Dragons), G North (Northampton), A Cuthbert (Cardiff Blues), H Amos (Newport Gwent Dragons), S Williams (Scarlets), J Davies (Clermont Auvergne), J Roberts (Racing Métro), C Allen (Cardiff Blues), R Priestland (Scarlets), D Biggar (Ospreys), M Phillips (Racing Métro), R Webb (Ospreys), R Williams (Scarlets).

Forwards G Jenkins (Cardiff Blues), P James (Bath), N Smith (Ospreys), A Jarvis (Ospreys), S Lee (Scarlets), R Jones (Scarlets), R Hibbard (Gloucester), E Phillips (Scarlets), S Baldwin (Ospreys), A-W Jones (Ospreys), J Ball (Scarlets), B Davies (Wasps), L Charteris (Racing Métro), D Lydiate (Racing Métro), J King (Ospreys), S Warburton (Cardiff Blues), J Tipuric (Ospreys), D Baker (Ospreys), T Faletau (Newport Gwent Dragons).

I'm a little annoyed that either O Williams or Patchell are left out. I think we've seen enough of porno tache Priestland to know he hasn't got the bottle. Granted Patchell is probably too young but Williams was playing well last season for Leicester and looks class, arrogant as hell too which is a bonus for an international 10 for me. Would also like Eli Walker to be in there but his form ain't that great and he's just come back from injury I guess.

That squad screams 'we're ffyced if samson gets injured' in a very major way. The absence of the treacherous pie lover is deserved but I'd have liked him to have kicked on for another season to bed Samson in more and to see whether there's any merit at all in the continuing Rhodri Jones at TH experiment.

Priestland is an even bigger busted flush than Muhnner but we all know that Roger Lewis' pet coach has a semi for him in spite of the evidence to the contrary. I agree that Patchell and Williams should have been called up. Both offer a second receiver option at 12 as well. Looks like Baker is broken, which is a shame as he's going well.

Also great to see Nicky Smith getting a call up at LH. He's going to be very special IMO

And what has Tom Prydie done to deserve inclusion? Apart from being picked out of position in a wank gwent team.

Yeah. Interesting call. Haven't been watching any rugby to speak of this season so not sure how he's going. Talented kid who's had rotten luck with injury. Hope it's the right one. Can't see him getting close to the matchday squad in any event
