Ron DeSantis' Time is Up

When the news of the stunt broke, volunteers at Martha’s Vineyard rushed out with pizza, salad, and soup. “People were just showing up (at the church) with food, rice, and beans,” Carla Cooper, head of the Democratic Council of Martha’s Vineyard, said. “When something happens to our island, we come together to help. We are going to take care of these people.”

You would think this response would have humiliated DeSantis, whose imagination had no room for the possibility that anybody could act so humanely. Instead, conservative media simply responded as if rich liberals had acted in the way Desantis anticipated. The Federalist gleefully reported that liberals were “melting down” as if they were angry at having to accommodate immigrants, rather than at DeSantis’s abuse of immigrants. It became a “fact” in the conservative media that Martha’s Vineyard was responding to the immigrants with terror

If conservative media in the US can freely post such flagrant bullshit without concern that it my blow up in their face, then that's a damning indictment of just how entrenched and siloed conservatives are in the USA...

Citing a lack of originality in the Florida governor’s decision to ship displaced Venezuelans to Martha’s Vineyard this week, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott sent hundreds of migrants to Ron DeSantis’ house Friday to teach him a lesson about stealing other people’s ideas. “That was totally my thing first, and now he’s acting like he came up with this way to mislead, humiliate, and abuse immigrants all on his own?” said Abbott

it's not going well for desantis

Nice readable background piece from an October FT. In short, he is bright, ruthless, numerate, thorough, lacks skills in 'retail politics' and has a big asset in his wife, Casey, who makes up for his lack of social skills and friends. She is his closest aide and confidante.

Ron DeSantis is Donald Trump with brains and without the drama

DeSantis just lost a court case on academic freedom:

Federal Judge Blocks Ron DeSantis' 'Positively Dystopian' Stop WOKE Act
The ruling assailed DeSantis and Florida Republicans for trying to “muzzle its university professors … and cast us all into the dark.”

Declaring it a “positively dystopian” assault on free speech, a U.S. district judge blocked enforcement of provisions of a Florida law banning state university professors from expressing certain opinions on topics related racism, sexism and other forms of discrimination in their classes on Thursday.

The decision means that the leadership of Florida’s state university system cannot punish professors or instructors for violating the prohibition on the expression of eight viewpoints enacted by GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis and state legislative Republicans under the Individual Freedom Act of 2022.

In a blistering opinion that opens by quoting George Orwell’s classic anti-totalitarian novel “1984,” Judge Mark Walker, appointed by President Barack Obama, ruled that the law violated the First Amendment right of freedom of speech of both professors and students and the Fourteenth Amendment by being unconstitutionally vague.

“In this case, the State of Florida lays the cornerstone of its own Ministry of Truth under the guise of the Individual Freedom Act, declaring which viewpoints shall be orthodox and which shall be verboten in its university classrooms,” Walker wrote.

“[T]he First Amendment does not permit the State of Florida to muzzle its university professors, impose its own orthodoxy of viewpoints, and cast us all into the dark,” Walker concluded.

The case focused on the law’s prohibition on the expression of eight different viewpoints related to race, sex, gender and sexual orientation by state university professors. The law, originally introduced by DeSantis as the Stop WOKE Act, was enacted as part of the governor’s culture war political agenda seeking to bend institutions from state universities, government bureaucracies and in-state corporations to the will of Republican politicians.

If this had been allowed to stand it would make professors bow to the current political whims of those in power and be used to punish anyone disagreeing.

Cheers for the context.
Are the non-private ones owned and run by particular States (maybe some Federal military ones)?

there's a few types: there are unis run by a board of regents appointed by the state gov't (SUNY, UC); that are administered by city governments though they have to be approved by the state regents (CUNY, Cincinnati); a few that are federal (the military academies). it gets more complicated, but that's the outline.

In the US, we have land grant universities. During the Civil War, the Lincoln administration set aside land for states to build colleges. The first land grant law passed was for whites-only universities. (My alma mater is a land grant college). These usually had law, classics, English, education, and agriculture programs. There was a second law passed after the Civil War for land grant colleges for African Americans. These are still in existence and called HSBCs. These were meant to be mainly agricultural education programs and were, of course, poorly funded. Some of them also had teacher education programs, but that was about it.

Yeah, but is he trapped under a cow?

Isn't DeSantis basically a compulsive liar?
I could have sworn I read an article about how his past is basically made up and totally fictional..
