Rolf Harris: dead at last

Interesting.
I met him in the late 1970s - they did a kids roadshow on the campus where I was a student.
A lot of fellow students were acting as "back-stage crew" including keeping the kids "quiet" between takes.
I had a couple of chats with him - he was polite, cracked a few jokes at the expense of the TV crew [who were having "technical problems"] and he was sober. The so-called painting was a bit of a travesty ! And, I was close enough during that time that I would have smelt anything ...
The whiskey incident was in the 90s fyi

There was an interview with him NME in the 1980s which was totally at odds with his usual public persona - something to the effect that the disappearance of ancient peoples like the Hittites showed that genocide was a normal part of human history.

Not the usual NME interview then.

So Noel, what message do you take from the disappearance of the Hittites?

My ex from the early 90s briefly worked with him when she was a vet nurse at the "animal hospital". She had no stories to share really except that in real life he was nothing like his TV persona.

The Aerial album by Kate Bush was remastered after Rolf's crimes became public. It was in essence De-Rolfed. Now the original vinyl which features the beast himself goes for mucho bucko.

He had a nerve saying that as an Australian who appropriated Aboriginal culture

I'd forgotten all about him being on that. I got it when released ,so he'll be on there.

I heard him live once, but never saw him. I was in an arts centre in Brentford for an Iarla O'Lionaird album launch and Rolf was live in a downstairs studio beforehand. We could unfortunately hear him, but didn't bother leaving the bar to watch.

I queued up for his autograph in the 70's. He was the 'star' at a kids sponsored swim . 😔.

He was a good kids' entertainer back in the day. I was really shocked when the news about him came out. Years ago I took my son and my nephew to see him performing and we all enjoyed it.

Horrible when fun, happy memories get shat on.
Agreed. A mate of mine was thrilled to meet him in the 90s when she took a cat she'd found to the vets and walked into an episode of Animal hospital. When Savile's abuse hit the papers I think a lot of people like myself felt guilty because we'd spent years laughing at the rumours but when Harris got in trouble there was widespread disbelief.

You're joking, of course, but the Oxbridge toffs of the NME did once mock the redoutable Oasis frontman thusly: "Noel Gallagher doesn't like his contract - there are too many big words, and not enough pictures."

Or denial. I worked with an otherwise perfectly sane woman who would not accept AT ALL that any of it was true. She was virulent in her belief. Must have seriously fucked with her head.

I know someone who brought two of his paintings as investments before his behaviour came out...

Yup - My Gran bought one in the 1970's. Her sole foray into the art world and it is an awful thing - Might have been worth a few hundred pounds before his downfall but I looked his work-up more recently and at best it might have got around thirty quid.

He seems to have been prolific at that time, so I guess there must be a lot of people in the same boat.

Top of the Hittite parade.

Smash Hittites.

I found it odd that some papers were saying his family keeping the death announcement back for two weeks until after the cremation was an 'insult to his victims'. I mean it might be to hide his death for years or something but it's fair that the family get to have a funeral without a media circus. I think the papers mean they're insulted that they didn't have the chance to cover it.

But very glad to see the BBC leading their reporting of his death with the fact he was an abuser.

"The Public Interest isn't necessarily the same as what the public are interested in"...

The internet is awash with cartoons and jokey memes containing Saville, Harris and Schofield. Perhaps it's just a way of coping with all the misery out there but i find the whole thing a bit odd to say the least. They should be forgotten, in my opinion and not used for comedy value for a few giggles and likes. They were absolute evil fucking beasts, i can't bring myself to link/ turn that to satire when so many people suffered so much from the deeds of those two paedophile cunts. Not moralising here, just my thoughts after being inundated with texts and pictures of two vile beasts that i never want to see again.

Many years ago I hot a pic of his. I've no idea what happened to it, but I'm not looking.
