Rochdale by-election

Would be funny if there was a lightning strike or similar act of god that ignited all the votes before counting and meant we had to go again

Some Labour voters will switch to LD, some loons will switch to Danczuk, the small section of the electorate which believes that middle eastern politics is key to the future of Rochdale is split anyway between Galloway and Ali, a majority of voters in a safe Labour seat in a low-turnout election will go for the bloke with the Labour logo next to his name on the ballot paper, which is Ali. Galloway has zero chance and Ali will sit for a few months then be replaced come the general election.

It’s a storm in a teacup

Still confident in the above.

Odds on a Labour victory dropping rapidly on Betfair; Ba’athist candidate odds rising fast. They were neck and neck an hour ago.

Going to be a bit embarrassing for the 'Labour' candidate, turning up at the count with precisely nil Labour supporters with him (though, to be honest, not as embarrassing as losing to an egotistical Stalinist).

I would really like the MRL candidate to win but I reckon based on very little actual knowledge that the (not)Labour guy will squeeze in based on postal votes already cast. It won't surprise me at all though if when I check the news tomorrow morning I discover that everyone's favourite apologist for despots has gotten his slimy ass back in the HoC.

Anyway, I've finally come to a prediction: 'Lab' win, unless a very low turnout. I just can't see how the Stalinist goon gets many votes outside of the Muslim and pro-Palestinian vote. Probably have to drop to below 20% for that to work out for the Ba'athist.

It's rare these days to feel any excitement about a LP win, but I'm very much hoping your prediction comes to pass. The potential for Starmer embarrassment is just too good.

It's pretty much a lose-lose scenario. I'd struggle to think of many elections where I wouldn't be happy about an anti-war candidate, nominally campaigning from the left, giving Labour a bloody nose. But the one single person where that wouldn't be the case... is the one standing against Labour. And if Labour do squeak home, you can imagine the nauseating line they'll be spinning: Look, we even won when we didn't really stand!

Starmer is embarrassed either way. The Liberals & Danczuk are scrambling for relevance, the Tory went on holiday & the other loons are nowhere.

Too close to call for the bookies:
