I don't believe, on Urban75, that is generally the case. When DotCommunist uses "debate club" (an institution which enforces certain minimum standards of factual accuracy and logical consistency) as a pejorative term, (s)he may speaking for the majority. The value in moral debate is probably that it enables one to have slightly clearer and more coherent opinions where previously one didn't have any. And that's only if it is nuanced debate about a specific circumstance, as opposed to a showy duel of fundamental principles. Mad old horse-cuddling Fred says something about morals being too important to leave to clumsy philosophers, and he's bang on - sopa operas and human interest news stories trade in moral dilemmas, and that's the genuine stuff of ethical calisthenics, rather than crude attempts to set out and defend universal principles.

I'm torn on it, on the one hand I have worked first hand in slaughter and its horrific, but on the other is this motivated by animal welfare or bigotry?

One of the problems I face, which you don't, is that I need to maintain the thread of a conversation with several people simultaneously, each often pursuing its own fallacy, and all capable of being quoted out of context weeks later.

So I make no apology for being careful about what I leave on the record, having been forced by necessity to respond quickly to several points at once. Deal with it.
