I follow one of the 'old Glasgow in pictures' accounts on twitter, and the carving off of huge areas of what used to be the centre of Glasgow into a wasteland is astonishing...

The first time I drove along the M8 (30 years ago?) I thought it was the most space age thing of having a motorway in the centre of a city - I was mesmerised, not least because my only knowledge of Glasgow came from watching Taggart, but within a month of moving up for uni I know different.

I lived within hearing distance of that bit of motorway for three years.

Seeing as only a few years ago they were actually building more of this kind of nonsense on the south side it seems unlikely this petition will get anywhere but I'll sign it and wish the best of luck.

At the time, there was a problem with substandard housing in certain areas of the city, although the destruction caused by the M8 destroyed more than just poor housing - there was good quality housing destroyed as well. Certain communities were practically wiped out, such as Anderson, part of Charing Cross, the New City Road/Cowcaddens area and Townhead.

There has been significant architectural losses such as the Grand hotel at Charing Cross. The Martyrs Public School by Charles Rennie Mackintosh was saved by a whisker, and those travelling on the M8 pass it very close by Anderston Station was a beautiful building, curved to fit the sit. That was demolished and the station now sits isolated under the soaring motorway bridges. The Mitchell Library also overlooks the motorway.

The centre of Glasgow narrowly escaped the zeal of town planners in the 1940s with the Bruce Plan. There was a certain vogue at the time for such city reshaping projects, although most were not enacted, fortunately. Edinburgh lost the Greenhill, Picardy Place and upper Leith Street area to roundabouts destined to become a huge motorway linkage system, that fortunately did not come to fruition.

There were also the loss of Phoenix Park at New City Road, a central green space appreciated by many.

The M8 has been described as a scar on the city of Glasgow. That description often feels apt to me.

Poor Coventry got done over proper by its inner ring road :(
Just try and walk or cycle past this monstrosity

I drove it for the first time one night when I was young and stupid in my company car. A sort of Bladerunner/video game experience. The impression I got was that the cars were being protected from the Glaswegians. I felt a compulsion to take the bends as fast as possible, for security reasons.

I believe it's called humour m'lud, its often used in a self-depreciating way to gently poke at the writers own attitudes and actions - though of course I defer to m'learned friend to provide another explanation should he feel it appropriate.

You joyless arse.
