Rape, sexual assault and harassment in the entertainment industry

Such a narcissistic view, isn't it - that these folks paranoid conspiracies are enough for "state and shadowy elites" intervention. Too thick to realise that those truly in power love to see legions hoodwinked by this utter horseshit. They truly cannot see that they are conspiracists and little else and that elites won't give a single shit what their latest paranoid projection is. Scary tbh.
Blumenthal is a shady character... I suspect he knows what he is doing and isn't just a crazy conspiracist. The Grayzone is often featured on CGTN, Russia Today, Press TV and they must make a lot of money from it.

This is why I stick to Urban75 and reading books. Reddit etc is mostly terrible, other social media even worse.
yes, agree. I have an attitude of reunification to nearly all of it. I was on Reddit recently for about a year and soon realised my mental and emotional landscape would be far better off without it. I enjoy podcasts and my kindle and urban.

Breaking news on Sky, youtube has suspended the monetisation of his channel. :)

YouTube has suspended adverts on videos by Russell Brand after the comedian was accused of rape and sexual assault.

The Google-owned company said it had suspended the monetisation of Mr Brand's channel for "violating our Creator Responsibility policy".

I normally just look at the Reddit headlines without signing in - the comments on those usually seem uncontroversial - any descent into conspiracy theory tends to have the piss taken. At least, those are the top replies - I don't go further than the first page or so.

Musk recently started paying big names but it's unclear how much or how often. Instagram allows monetization for a share of ads but is more geared around you punting your own stuff. Quite often the online shop is a big income stream because the margins are high but his appears to be down for "review" atm.

Even TikTok has become a massive online shop. As I said on the other thread I'd be delighted if his escape hatch isn't as financially secure as he'd expected.

With Reddit the karma system means there is still a kind of echo chamber mentality depending on the forum. You can say something unpopular on Urban and you might not get likes but you won't get downvoted, and I think if you get negative karma you can't post on a lot of subreddits by default. Also most of the leftist subreddits are ridiculously toxic and ban anyone who suggests Stalin may not have been a Saint or that Xi Jinping may not working to realise a classless stateless society.

Yeah a lot of the Reddit left is prickly about Leninism - I was a bit shocked when I got banned for "racism" from GreenAndPleasant having expressed my dislike of Xi Jinping agit prop. I get the impression the younger generation of Tankies (as in the modern meaning) spotted a good opportunity to do the usual "take over secretary roles, abuse power to oust perceived rivals" tactic.

Ouch, that will hurt him.

Do people get money from Twitter and Instagram in the same way?

<rob ray covered my first sentence> But youtube revenue is a notoriously tricky business in any case... As in the direct income from ads youtube placements. That said Brand potentially relied on it more than most? Frequent, high view count videos. He doesn't have a patreon, but he has a 'locals' membership (despite being fairly online, had not heard of this - apparently Dave Rubin set it up after he and Peterson's spat with Patreon re Carl Benjamin). No idea whether he has some kind of deal for his podcast. Hmm... From that post you can probably tell that content monetisation for major creators is a complex beast with a lot of potential approaches.

I suspect he has a very high cost lifestyle as well, so stuff like this will hopefully hurt him even if it still leaves him with a significant income from other places.

Novara covering it at length, wonder what their take will be...

I think he might actually get charged and convicted with rape listening to some of the accounts and evidence (I didn't watch the documentary).

I was at a comedy gig on Sunday, and all 5 comedians on the bill made reference to the Russell Brand story (not surprisingly, since it had exploded the day before).

One of the women comedians actually asked the question of the audience if anyone was surprised by the allegations, and stated "we all knew! But he has got good lawyers" and then proceeded to relate a story about when she met him, which had nothing to do with sexual predatory, but showed what a vile man he is.

I have never liked Russell Brand, and am not surprised by these allegations, and neither do I feel any empathy or concern for him.

I don't really remember why I disliked him so much originally - we saw him in a back room of a pub gig way back before all the TV stuff, and didn't like him then, even, so stayed away from him, and avoided programmes he was on on telly.

I am pissed off that this has been going on for so long, and everyone knew, apparently, and he got away with it for years and years. How many women has he damaged on his canter through life, and how many of our institutions have enabled that?

shudder

This stuff has led to me coming across Pearl Davis for the first time, a 26 year old 'anti-feminist influencer' who (obviously) is skeptical of these allegations. She actually thinks women shouldn't be allowed to vote and produces a tshirt with that as a slogan. Won't link to any of her SM stuff (1.8 million YouTube subscribers...), but it's proper jaw dropping.

Absolutely wtaf is going on in the world.

Apparently he’s gained followers on social media since the weekend. Who looks at this stuff and thinks “I’ll give him a follow”….

I’d guess it’s people who watched him avidly anyway but hadn’t got round to clicking “subscribe” or whatever, and are now doing so as a show of support.

Plus a bit of what smokedout said, but I don’t think that would account for the numbers involved by itself.

Got to wonder about what else “everyone knows about” in the comedy/music/entertainment industries.

Maybe this will lead to people speaking up about others like it has in the past.

Does she actually think that? Does she actually believe anything?

I had likewise never heard of her, but couldn't resist taking a peek after I read that, because it's the weekend for me, and, you know, there's an element of outing to Bedlam about it. Her reason for not believing the allegations is that 'men lie for sex, women lie for attention'.

This is an example of a statement that is technically true, but meaningless. It is technically true because there are men who have lied for sex, and women who have lied for attention. It is meaningless, because there are any number of reasons why people lie. Sex is a subset of attention, and I am sure both men and women have lied for sex and non-sexual attention. They might also lie for money, or because they are embarrassed, or delusional, or for shits and giggles. One of the most depressing things about getting older is the realisation of how much dishonesty there is, everywhere.

But in this case she's giving the game away, isn't she? She thinks they're lying for attention, because that's precisely what she's doing.

I have no idea, but on some level maybe it doesn't even matter, the impact of her saying stuff like that all over the place is the same isn't it whether she believes it or not?

Dunno, feels more like a collapse of structures, coherent beliefs, trust and the social fabric as much as the simple growth of fascism (although there's some of that for sure).

Obligatory...

yep - post truth. past the point of return too. say waht you want as long as "it does numbers". welcome to the future folks.

You're right in that it sort of doesn't matter, but to me it's clearly a grift rather than a deeply held belief. She's not the only one, it's a crowded marketplace - men with a kink are easily parted from their money. If she truly believed this nonsense, she'd be quiet at home and letting her husband speak for her as is Right and Proper.

...i know fascism is an easy word to reach for but it does have a useful catch all ring to it...fascistic probably better....all in a neo 21st century fashion of course.... a lot of the collapse you mention is being cynically manipulated by overt political forces rather than just everyday stupidity.

not that relevant but i like to listen to boring things on youtube to help fall asleep...there was an old interview with bertrand russell i heard last night- did the trick! i really didnt last long! - but i remember one bit which was interesting which was him saying how dramatically the world had changed (recorded in the early 50s at a guess) and how utterly spun out by it all he was.... his grandfather was alive in the time of napoleon - already by Bert's time the world had got so complex and unsettled he found it hard to deal with and comprehend. two world wars can't have helped.

the acceleration of (technologically driven) change of the 20th century is carrying on full pelt in to this next century... a scary ride for sure....
