Well frankly, fuck public opinion.
Since Blair there has been a concerted attempt to introduce "patriotic," flag waving bullshit like this as a way of distracting from a very unpopular war.
Talk of St George's Day and statements of "britishness". This idea that our brave troops should be exempt from any sign of "disrespect".
So we are encouraged to be proud. To wave a union jack and salute our "brave troops". To forget the lies and the spin and the outrageous arrogance of this war. A war that should not have happened. and forget that a labour government jumped into bed with George Bush to launch an unnecessary war that has destroyed a society and killed thousands. The icing on the cake of course, is to label opposition to the war as unpatriotic.
This is what this is about. How dare those "bloody Muslims" disrespect "our"troops. As far as I know, every one of those demonstrators was British and perfectly entitled to demonstrate on this issue.
No.I don't believe in no platform for fundamentalist activists. I believe there is a fight going on within Muslim communities. A fight for what it means to be a Muslim. A fight for what it means to be British. Where is the left in these debates.Where is the left to explain to an angry muslim guy why he is right to oppose the war in Iraq and Israel in Palestine but Islamic nationalism is not the answer. Bin laden is winning the hearts and minds of a billion people, partly for want of better answers to legitimate questions. It doesn't have to be the case.
It is a sad fact that the anti homecoming demonstration was an Islamic nationalist afffair. I wish it was otherwise. I wish there were 5000 left wing anti war demonstrators there with progressive demands about the war, but there wasn't
It it is a sad fact that had the demonstration been a white, lefty demo against the war, then many people who are so outraged by the nerve of "those bloody Muslims" would perhaps be not so critical.

Last time I looked there was no conscription and becoming a soldier was a career move, like the police.

It would have been interesting to see what would have happened if a huge number of soldiers had refused to take part because they considered the invasion illegal.
I think a lot of soldiers thought they were doing the right thing, but conversely I think it is legitimate for people to protest and say it was not the right thing.

most front line soldiers are recruited from some of the poorest areas in the country when they are children and made to sign up to a deal that condemns them to imprisonment if they change there minds later
