Overnight Oats

Tis nice with thick Greek yogurt, fresh raspberry thrown in and honey on top. All done the night before. I got into it for quite a while for work because I don't eat breakie till I get there and there's too much bacon temptation in the canny.
 
I just bung them in the fridge ready to cook in the morning with half milk and half water.

I need to get hold of some dates, ran out a couple of weeks ago, as I usually soak chopped dates with them which makes them ludicrously sweet.
 
Yes - you were one of the people I remember posting about it. I think May Kasahara did too.

Oh wow - the carrot cake one does look fab, thank you! What is 'mixed spice'? What did you use?
Mixed spice is the one that's kind of christmassy, normally has mace and cloves in too.

I have OO at least twice a week, my go to is:

40g oats, fat free vanilla yogurt, cinnamon, cardamom, fresh blueberries and pomegranate, splash of oat milk.

Sometimes add chopped grapes, a plum, seeds and nuts. Finely grated carrot stirred in is lush.

Don't like frozen fruit in mine.
 
Ah proportions... I mostly dollop the yogurt by eye, maybe 100g ish and add milk until it's the right consistency for me :oops:

Dessicated coconut is quite nice for a treat :D
 
Never had this but keen on yogurty oats so going to make some as I have most of the things. I have made a sort of Cranachan like this with tayberries and yog or cream, and whiskey too or rum
Not sure how much work I'd get done if I was having whisky/rum for breakfast. :(
 
You can soak oats . And cook the porridge next morning. It makes for a smoother porridge. Also used be done when oats were less fine.
Seems unnecessary when Scottish and Irish oats cook in two minutes and come out so smooth
???

Ah but this overnight is eaten cold?
 
I love overnight oats and the carrot cake recipe is lush.
I've got into the habit of doing around 30g oats, 10g milled flax seed, enough milk to cover it, frozen berries, dollop of greek yogurt on top and then when ready to eat I top with pumpkin seeds and 2 Brazil nuts and a drizzle of honey.

Think the overnight soaking / porridge confusion is maybe down to pinhead oats which are often soaked overnight before cooking?

I like porridge and it’s my go to on the rare occasions i remember to eat breakfast
It can be convenient to have food ready in the morning to eat or stuck in your bag for later without any prep, and sometimes you don't want hot food for whatever reason, and it's a different thing than just cold porridge anyway. Soaking overnight (or cheating with boiling water like I do) gives the oats more time to soak up some moisture from the other ingredients, which lots of people find better texture-wise.
 
It's pretty much the same consistency and temp by the time you've added yoghurt etc, just without the faff preparing stuff the day before which for me is more convenient.

I have stopped eating raw muesli for this reason, my iron levels are low enough as it is!
 
I do one cup semi skimmed milk, then 3 tbsp honey (sometimes less depending on flavour of honey) and tsp vanilla essence. Mix, then add one cup 0 fat yoghurt... although must be says very savoury Greek yoghurt is especially nice, mix, then add 1.5 cups oats and 1/2 tsp cinnamon. Works well...I was getting a bit tired of it but turn started buying organic oats from zero packaging shop down the road and is swear to god they actually taste better. Always thought there wasn't much different.

This makes 3 servings for me.

I eat with half a cup of whatever fruit is around. Red apple tends to go best though, or ripe British strawbs.

Didn't know that about soaking the oats, I do that when I make porridge in the morning. Pour hot water I've used to warm my coffee mug into the pan and leave them soaking until I'm ready to make my porridge :thumbs:

I never got on the overnight oat wagon as the texture/temperature doesn't appeal to me, but this is making me think that perhaps I should reconsider and give it a go!
 
Uncooked porridge then, if you will!
I was sceptical as well but it's really nice and very convenient if you take your breakfast to work rather than eating before you leave the house.
I wouldn't bother if I was just going to eat it at home before I left for the day.

Anyway:
40g oats
40g yogurt of whatever type you have - around 2 heaped dessert spoons
90g or thereabouts of milk.

I weigh everything as I just stick my jar on the scales and and throw it all in.

Add a handful of raisins or sultanas or any dried fruit to the overnight mixture plus some honey or maple syrup. Cinnamon and or mixed spice is good at this point

Top with berries or some other fresh or tinned fruit in the morning

I wonder whether oats in the 50s and 60s were coarser or less rolled or something, because they certainly didn't cook in two minutes in my day :)
But yes, that is a derail, since that is not overnight oats. I discovered a couple of years ago :)
