Olympic Opening Ceremony, London 2012

One thing we really aren't all aware of just how significant popular culture is to how we are seen in the world and how important 'our'music is to them, , last night I was talking to my young Hungarian friend and she said, ''you are english, you are so lucky, you have all the music''

I was watching Grosse Point Blank the other night and couldn't believe how much of the music was British

btw, the sound of the event wasn't too good on the BBC, it would have been incredible in the stadium to hear the repetitive beats of the 950 drummers and Evelyn Glennie was fantastic...

Yep, we aren't just playing to a British audience. you have to connect to the furriners so it has to have some recognition factor.

I disagree, one thing "we" are acutely aware of is how great our music is. Unless you were born after 1990!

As much as I hope the media to highlight Burley's comments I don't want them to mar what was a great night. Be much better if he was quietly extinguished... in a horrible way.

The Japanese used balloons like that to bomb Canada and America during WW2.

Different material, different flight profile. The fire balloons were designed to sit in the jet stream (had a mechanism to maintain the correct altitude around 10km) and then destroy themselves after delivering their payload. Met balloons are designed to keep climbing and eventually burst and fragment.

Hmm, if the is a screen grab from the ceremony feed (looks familiar), can't help feeling that disk is a little too well lit if it were launched at the start of the event and the altitude a tad high:

I'm rather annoyed that I can't seem to find the whole thing to watch anywhere. I've managed to see it up until the child catcher.

Ok, just finished watching it and I thought it was ace. I liked the first bit the best.
Loved it though. Made me feel all warm and fuzzy :)

Can somebody who is better at these things please try and find a very old thread in the Olympic flame and how it should be lit. I am pretty sure i proposed that every nation should carry in a piece that would fit together, pretty much like what happened. I'm suing I tell ya!
