Olympic Opening Ceremony, London 2012

How many million?

Well I thought it was great but how much was it worth, that is the question?

And they were volunteers so it did not go on wages!

Oh and the worthies carrying the olympic flag, Shami Chakrabati was there but the first to be named was Mrs Lawrence. I am assuming that was Steven Lawrence's mum yes?

That was another thing. One of the women carrying the flag was apparently the UN Champion of the Earth.

Made me wonder: does she have an office at UN headquarters in New York. On the office door, does it say, 'Champion of the Earth'?

And who was the Asian guy who had done so much something for something, I can't recall exactly? I asked my wife. She said, probably all the British people know who it is.

Ban Kee Moon kept waving out of turn. Limelight hog!

Someone who knows more about these things than I do reckons that the Macca singing twice thing was just the BBC screwing up the feed.

I dunno, I'm pretty sure he looked a bit thrown and then had to catch up with himself or something. Could easily be wrong though.

e2a: Macca, not Romney :hmm:

is it true the BBC didn't screen the Jarrow March/Trade Union bit?...

Danny managed to get millions to screen what was in many ways pro-welfare state propaganda and he even included the enclosures, how on earth did he get away with it?, we would all be complaining if it had been say, Nial Ferguson's vision of past Imperial Britain...

Nice to see that the Olympic opening ceremony seems to be based on the twin themes of socialism and noncomformism. Nice to see the right side won.

We would be, but it wasn't, so it was great.

They are going to strangle wild animals! :(

Depends. Meteorological balloons destined for the upper atmosphere are generally made of latex (biodegradable anyway) which expand almost 100 fold by the time they reach their burst altitude of about 30km. At that point they fail drastically and disintegrate into very small fragments (the balloon itself tends to stay aloft in the upper atmosphere in the form of fine debris). The trailing package can then be picked up after parachuting back. If they want the cameras then local wildlife might not get much of a chance to top itself on the 'chute and any lines attached to the payload.

The Japanese used balloons like that to bomb Canada and America during WW2.

May have been removed from the itinerary because he had to cut 30mins off the entire show, otherwise it would still be going on now. Also it would have most definitely gone over most people's heads, especially since everyone outside of the North East can't even pronounce Jarrow.
