NHS Volunteer Responders

If I were in the U.K. I’d consider it. I was St John Ambulance but my certificate has run out. I’m sure there’d be something I could do to help.

It does concern me that the government is claiming it has things under control but still needs so many retired healthcare workers and so many volunteers. Is it possible they don’t really have a handle on it or is that my cynicism?

I don’t think it will be the case but I’d like to think some training would be offered, and some testing too, before these people were allowed onto the street. I doubt there’d be time for DBS type checks.

Anyone else concerned that the army of 250,000 untrained volunteers roaming around is a terrible idea in a lockdown? I also question peoples motivations but that is probably too cynical right.

No, it crossed my mind as well that receiving whatever kind of accreditation they're going to hand out might be quite a temptation to people who'd like a free license to roam around without being busted.

Dear Badgers,

Thank you for your enquiry to volunteer for NHS Volunteer Responders. Due to high volume of enquiries we may take between 2 and 7 days to check your identification. Please also be aware that we are not planning to start any volunteering until after the 31st of March 2020.

Thank you for your patience and once again thank you for your support.

I may regret asking but how do we feel about the politics of this thing?

On the one hand it feels like a way of glossing over the state's failure to adequately resource the NHS, both historically and now. If it's successful it will likely be used against the NHS afterwards. I find it very difficult to trust these kind of schemes - with the prevailing climate in this country they feel like a few degrees away from scabbing.

On the other hand, aside from the obvious matter of it being a national emergency and something that may save lives, it's an example of people offering what they can which under different circumstances is the model many of us aspire to.

I certainly see both sides of this ^

My politics are firmly behind your first point. Have been annoyed at some people saying 'this is not a time for politics' when the Tory party have clearly caused this to be a bigger problem than it could have been. I truly hope they are held accountable (hope being the operative word) after this has blown over, but for now if I can help coordinate or make a few vulnerable peoples time better then am going to do it.

That was my first reaction tbh though I've since signed up. There are plenty of older folk who must be struggling with isolation massively, if I can make their lives a little less lonely by calling up for a chat or grabbing a prescription then I'd be happy to.

Yep. They could have at least considered paying (some of the?) people that they are asking to come and prop up the broken system that they have hollowed out so that it has no chance of coping.
There are lot's of 'should have and could have' discussions to follow this and 'hopefully' they will be held to account.

In terms of payment there should have been an immediate roll out of nationwide basic income. Would have saved a lot of time, money and effort.

Would be good to see a cross party government set up to take this on.

More should haves and could haves from me ^ :D

Of course, once this thing is over pressure must be kept up so that shit-head business such as privatising our NHS and shit-head capitalists such as Branson and Stelios get told to properly fuck off.

But now, people need help and we’re all we’ve got, so I have signed up, have the same reply today that Badgers got, assume they are doing some kind of DBS type thing, as have offered to drive patients home and supplies from A to B.

I got accepted yesterday, I downloaded the app this afternoon but not set myself as 'on duty' yet as I am pissed. Going to dive in tomorrow
