NH Carnival 2011

Carnival is policed in such a tight way already and all the shops are bordered up I can't see there being much of a problem during daylight. But yes if there's fears of trouble after dark then it could be cancelled. Shame, it's what London needs right now.

Transport for London are now displaying information for travel to the Carnival on their website so presumably it's definitely still on?

I've tried to look through the history books, and I can't see any occasion when it hasn't gone ahead. I think it did in 81 (Brixton riots) and 85 (Broadwater).

RDK HI FI + MANASSEH sun 28th aug £5 9-Late The Music Bar, Brixton Hill SW2 1FD

Was planning on going to this, but just saw this...

personally i'd go for manasseh:cool: over rodigan:facepalm: any day...but that's just my taste. roots dub and rockers, as opposed to dancehall

Maybe it could just start & finish a bit earlier...I never understand why events like this finish relatively late, this seems to be when the problems happen.

ah yes, im with you there gavman, but dillinja is my dnb hero - dillinja + rodigan + more than likely rambunkscious mood by nightfall + possible guest list may win out!! Im usually at Aba Shanti all day at carnival, so by later i might be in the mood for a bit more digital things.
RDK are a great sound too - heard them in session once - brixton based i think im right in saying. May even try and hit them both - RDK first, then stumble down the hill to plan b around 1am. unfortunately my main raving partner in crime who keeps things going is set to be away... helps to have someone around to bounce off... most friends are kid and slipper bound these days.

7pm curfew is early enough i think. and 7pm means 7pm. everyone switched off bang on time from what i could see last year.

Well if anyone is a bit scared in light of tingz, the golden rule is go early on sunday and you'll have a hassle free time !

That's great news!

I dont know what carnival organisers have been saying but in recent years it has always been a 7PM shut off?!?!?

Fair play to them, I am really happy its going ahead!

When I used to go ages ago, some of the mobile systems / floats still ran til late. Is that what they are referring to, or has there been an early curfew for those in recent years, too?

it is a bit of strange announcement (floats shut off 6.30, sounds 7) - im pretty certain the sounds have shut at 7 at least the last 2 years, if not longer - im trying to remember back further... i seem to remember (doesnt mean much) that going back to the early nineties sounds shut at 8, but the floats kept playing all the way, which had a pied piper effect where you could follow a float as it slowly crawled out of the notting hill area. This lead to some memories of very funny soca-conga trains, and also the following of trucks in the opposite of direction of home.

Maybe the new change is floats at 6.30?

Just a thought of the top of my head about how carnival might be restructured: what do you think about the idea to have sunday as the floats and carnival parade day, and then Monday for the soundsystems? In a way the sounds get in the way of the floats and vice versa - it might give the floats room to have a bit more fun, and vice versa?

Sounds like a great idea. Hope it all goes well for you, I was hoping to come up and take my 14 year old nephew with me but will not take the risk in light of the riots. Not personally worried but it's the young un I'm concerned about.

Our festival in Bristol finishes at 2am and was trouble-free considering how massively pissed everyone seems to get.

St Paul's Carnival :)

Theyve had this years already. I reckon it's wortha trip if you know people down Bristol way. The carnival procession is tiny compared to NH (obviously!) but theres still plenty of stuff going on - really enjoyed St Agnes park which was rammed full of little kids playing with live shows and bouncy castles and that, twas lovely :)

Are there static soundsystems? is it just soca?

Very little soca to be honest, you'll usually find most other genres spotted around, reggae, dub, R&B, techno etc Definitely worth a trip down, funny enough we get a few Londoners down who have given up on NH as they feel it's grown too big/commercial. We're facing a bit of a funding crisis atm (who isn't? :() but should be back on next year. It's the first Saturday in July so make a note in your diary.

I may well do that BA - been meaning to visit Bristol. If you remember, could you start a thread in the run up? Id imagine there's a Full Cycle/Roni Size night on at the time... thanks.

I don't live in Bristol, but I went in 2009 and last year. Didn't make it this year due to uni, which I was pretty gutted about to be honest. Got loads of photos of the parade last year, I love the fact it was mostly kids from the local schools, think that's a really nice thing. Used to live in leicester and go to the carnival there, but that one isn't really "community" based so much, i think St Pauls has got a lot going for it in that respect. Went to Birmingham carnival a couple of weeks back, but had to leave before the parade arrived, which is when it all kicks off really, so I missed out on all the good parts :(

I've read there's issues with funding for St Pauls which is a shame, the text donation thing apparently wasn't very popular - i donated even though I didn't go, so that surprises me. seems there's been a few people saying there wasn't much in that way of people shaking buckets, don't know how true that is, but that's got to be quite lucrative when people have had a few beers.

That's exactly what I thought when I heard, a very agreeable comprimise!

Mentioned on another forum that a news item on telly said that the mayors office want to ticket parts of carnival! And possibly this is related to why there's no Good Times this year. Tickets? To a free street party?

If they can commodify it, they can control it, and that'll mean impinging even more on festivities in order that it doesn't disturb the poor ruling-class types who live in the area more than it has to.

It's not like the stupid cunts don't know what Carnival is, what it actually means, in fact it's probably partly about Carnival representing kicking over the traces and kicking against the pricks that makes them want to try and control it.

Wtf?!

But then, as VP says, that would be perfect for the establishment in order to gain more control over the Carnival - not only ticketing, but their desire to uproot it entirely and move it to somewhere like Hyde Park, and eventually sanitise it into becoming 'yet another commercial music festival'.

The Respect festival wasn't safe in this Mayor's hands for very long.
