This is the final Carnival for Jah Observer Sound System before they go into retirement. For many years it's been my favourite spot, they'll be missed but will be going out with a bang and should be rammed with people stopping by to pay their respects.

Carnival will be called off this year, you can bet on it.

It seems likely :(

If football matches with small crowds by comparison are being cancelled things don't bode well. I hope that it does not get called off and there is a bit of time to calm things down.

IMHO this year Carnival is needed more than ever.

IMHO this year Carnival is needed more than ever.

This is what I have been trying to say (albeit very badly)

There's a lot of people like me who look cant afford to go away on holiday and look at carnival as a well earned break from the reality of day to day life in and around London. If carnival does not go ahead there's gonna be a lot of pissed off people. Each year a group of about 30/40 of us meet up at carnival and given how hectic most of our lifes are atm, its the only opportunity everyone gets to see each other in a reasonably happy setting.

I cant image the news will go down too well if they do cancel it (I REALLY hope they dont).

I live in Ladbroke Grove and was really looking forward to it. Now I hope they call if off. I wish that wasn't the case but if we can't manage a couple of hundreds fuckwits, what's gonna happen if a small portion of the 1.5m people get unruly?

Not worth the risk:(

As far as I can tell, a lot of the trouble has been caused by young people who've got a bit carried away with the idea of showing how hard they are by smashing windows, setting a few fires and getting something nice - not a lot of violence against non police. So yeah, punish all of London for a few silly little fuckwits who need to grow up, why don't you?

The reality is that the entire budget for policing it has already been spent trying to sort out the riot. I can see Cameron making that excuse for calling it off. Gonna be another riot!

I'm going to really hate myself for saying this, but it sounds to me as if "you've got to fight for your right to party".

It's not about punishment, it's about not being able to police a few hundred rioters and potential for needing to handle thousands.

Tell that to young people who've worked hard to get ready for this year's carnival and weren't out making trouble.

And *ahem* 'young-ish' people who were looking forward to their first carnival as a resident!

You can't encourage £1m plus people into an area if there's a real possibility of trouble, on the basis that it's unfair to cancel it.

I reckon they'll cancel it, its too close and all thats happening at the moment is not going to be resolved by bank holiday.

Its a real shame if it is cancelled, would have been my third year in a row - its become a tradition and I think its a really nice day/days out.

Received this on the (I think) TUC mailing list-

PRESS RELEASE

Too early to speculate about Carnival’s cancellation

London Notting Hill Carnival Limited has been receiving enquiries about the possibility of
cancelling this year’s carnival in light of the unfortunate events that took place in London
over the weekend.

We will be meeting with the Local Authorities, Carnivalists and the Metropolitan Police to
assess the severity of the impact that this may potentially have on Carnival 2011 and to
discuss the measures that will be put in place to avoid any untoward incidents.

LNHCL will like to reinforce the sentiments of Commander Bob Broadhurst, the
Metropolitan Police officer responsible for leading the Notting Hill Carnival policing
operation.

"Given the huge number of people who take part in Carnival crime rates are low, and our
policing style in recent years has ensured that less people become victims of crime. We
know that everyone who loves Carnival wants that success to continue this year.”

yeah thanks for that! Please keep us up to date!

I was thinking if the met can not keep carnival safe how can they keep the Olympics safe? I am hoping carnival will go ahead so the police can demonstrate they can still deal with large public events.

Or so that the general public can show that most of them prefer to enjoy themselves instead of making trouble for no very good reason.

Innit, if they stop carnival not only might it cause just as much if not more trouble, but they are putting the Olympics in the rape rack effectively, esp with it being such a brilliant show of how the other ticket affording classes live.

The main problem (as I see it) for the carnival organisers, is the fight next year to keep it in NH as it is next year (and not some sanitised nonsense at Hyde Park, for example).

The 2012 one is predicted to be a completely different ball game. If this years' doesn't go ahead, it makes the above leap a whole lot easier to argue for. If for no other reason, it is that for which I think we desperately need to prevent it's cancellation this year.
