Netherlands v Argentina (Semi Final) Wednesday 9th July 2014

asking this again for halftime incase anyone missed it
would maradonna be able to make the runs that he used to, taking on the whole world, in todays game? I get the feeling in modern football theres a lot less room to play, and modern tactics are all about reducing that space. Would be curious if people who know whats what could confirm that - or is it all much the same
Obviously depends which tactics the team he'd be playing against used but generally I reckon he'd get away with it a fair few times. Robben's that kind of player.
Messi obviously does it too but what sets him apart is that his dribbling is only one of many skills in his toolbox. He has vision, passes excellently, and he's a deadball specialist. He's much more a team player (although by the looks of it that team seems to be limited to Barca)

Surely they do. I mean it may be in the same place as a tall player relatively, but absolutely their COG will be nearer the floor.

So what? Who would be easier to knock over Magic Johnson or Lionel Messi? There must be something comprehensive out there on this. It sounds as fishy as "you lose 40% of your body heat through your head" to me.

Yeah Maradona would be able to still do it with his stumpy little legs. Shorter players are better cos they fit into smaller spaces and they're lower to the ground so the middle of them is lower too.

The ideal football player is 5' 2". Bustling. Andy Reid.

you do lose all that heat from your head - unless you put a hat on. a bit like if you didnt wear any trousers. you'd then lost it all through your legs.

Was that supposed to be a minutes silence?
I was just checking some Spanish online papers and one of them is reporting on the minute's silence. So it did happen. But I guess commercial breaks are too important for ITV for such trivialities.

im reserving judgment on who that person is - any other posters willing to have a go should do so ;)

I think I've read definitively that the centre-of-gravity thing is a daft myth, as the heat through the head one definitely is. I can't recall the source, hence the hedging of my words, but it's a Keegan-esque nonsense surely.

It's a verifiable myth. Web is full of sources.
"head and chest are more sensitive to changes in temperature than the rest of the body, making it feel as if covering them up does more to prevent heat loss."

exactly. it doesnt matter if scientifically the percentage is 10% or 40% - its the bit that makes you feel really cold, more than other bits of your body
If Netherlands win is it all round to Robben's for a pancake and a smoke?
niceshhhh...

Okay. If you're talking about the feeling I wouldn't have argued. I was talking about actual heat loss.

I never want to hear that sickly, 'Braaa-zeel, Braaa-zeel " music ident that ITV inflict on us every time they have a break. That is all.

That is actually part of a real song - and a nice song too - but you'll never want to hear the good version of it again because ITV have ruined it. That's what ITV do though isn't it?

Shorter players having shorter legs means they have more control and shielding of the ball due to the shorter lenght of stride.
They also have more stability as there feet are in mid air forca shorter space of time.
CoG is relative to body mass so height is only one variable contributing to stability and therefore agility.
Doesn't mean a tall skinny player cant dribble a good. They just look gangly and more prone to being tackled.
