Germany v Argentina (Final) Sunday 13th July 2014

Superb final - i was up for Deutschland, and thrilled with the result! Fantastic game and the Argentinians were also brilliant. Sorry some folks got injured. My German brother in law said in jest, on the phone 'The Argentinians couldnt beat Germany so they beat us up!'

Spain were the first country to not get their name engraved on the trophy in their own language. I wonder if Germany will suffer the same ignominy, or whether they'll get Deutschland on it.

Enjoyed it. Shame there were not more goals but more evenly matched than expected. I thought if Argentina got an early goal they might nick it. If Germany got an early goal then they would score more.

As a neutral (sweepstake win aside) I almost wanted penalties rather than the inevitable 1-0 either way that extra time would/did deliver.

Great tournament regardless. Enjoyed it more than any I have seen in my lifetime.

I want to do a thread about Euro 2000. Does everyone remember how brilliant it was? Seems forgotten.

I did think if it ended in 90 minutes Argentina would be the team to get it. Once extra time Germany seemed to have it. Maybe the extra days rest since their easier semi final? Maybe they have a stronger/fitter squad?

good point about Germanys route through the tournament

Group of death:
vs. Portugal- WON 4-0
vs. Ghana- DREW 2-2
vs. USA- WON 1-0

vs. Algeria- WON 2-1 (Extra-time)
vs. France- WON 1-0
vs. Brazil- WON 7-1

and then Argentina in the final
unbeaten against the toughest teams, including the two favourites

yeah Argentina flagged at 80mins even

Quite. Theres always more than two positions in an argument. I just think the Messi=Maradona comparisons laughable and always have done.

Not really. I've watched Messi very cloesly for 7 years now. He's been more than Maradona's equal at club level and has a much better international goal-scoring record. You can make a case for either, and Mexico '86 tips it towards Maradona after last night. The idea comparisons are "laughable" is laughable. They are legitimate and there are all kinds of arguments in favour of Messi.

He would have done it tonight if he wasn't sick. It's a question of whether he recovers from this chronic illness or not. Think how well he played while ill through this tournament.

Alexander Gerst celebrating in space.

what do you want to talk about Minnie :hmm:

I like all the stories about the fans travels to get there and what they're up to and all that kind of nonsense. I enjoy watching the crowds, the anthems, the drama, the laughter, the cheers, the tears, watching the fans discover the country, watching fans from different countries meeting etc. All the not exciting stuff unless you're sad like me and like watching people :D

Courtesy of Qatar Airways.

They're not Qatar. I've flown Emirates and I'm 99% sure they're Emirates. I really wanted someone to shove a rocket up their arses to wipe their fake grins off their faces and biscuit uniforms with a cherry on the top

As a Barcelona follower I've watched Messi since Rijkaard brought him on as a sub in 2004, a talented player groomed from the youth academy blended into a team already stacked with the worlds best players and ive studied Maradonas career at international level, from his humble beginnings to Boca, Barca and the miracles he worked at Napolli. Its like comparing a traffic light to a zebra. Two totally different things from two totally different eras. Maradona was a true "No. 10," a classic Argentine playmaker. Messi is a forward, hence his goal scoring record, who on occasion has played as a playmaker but has never thrived in that role. So I stand by view that comparisons between Messi and Maradona are laughable, as well as the endless excuse making offered when Messi doesn't have all the advantages he gets while playing for Barcelona in La Liga or 'The Champions' League.

There's no reconciliation between our two viewpoints. At least they're both fairly argued.

I know :(

I'm not actually into football, but I reckon I've watched almost every match (although some have been on fast forward) and I missed one or two that time there were 3 on on one day, but I like all the stories going on in the background with the fans :D
