Many dead in coordinated Paris shootings and explosions

yeah its an age old guerilla tactic. Strategy of tension.

It is, but it is questionable whether these attacks were carried out with that degree of thinking. Loads of terror groups had the capability to do this sort of massacre-thing down the years (including the Kouachi brothers), but they didn't because they knew what the scale of the state's response would be, and that no-one (or at least a vanishingly small number of people) would oppose it, and the incentive to dob those involved in planning these things would be very real and very compelling (and very correct).

A few more of these and it will be the end of democracy in Europe. I don't say that with any relish, or belief that some kind of shadowy group or intelligence service is doing it - I don't. Just look at Israel... five years ago you could hold leftist anti-war demonstrations there now you can't because they are attacked while the police do not intervene, that's our future unless something changes.

Thats what daesh want.

As many problems as this country has fuck am i glad i dont live in france.

As so many sensible people have said, this couldn't have been cooked up in a day. So we can still be happy that the drone did its good work.

Of course not though

Of course not though whether it was today, next year we have the whole thing arse about face. Good work? Make him a martyr it will all go away?

I still think our democracy and civil society seems in a far healthier state than france (and i dont think ours is healthy at all)

They also seem far to have far more active jihadi cells in a position to strike

I'm sure thats a legitimate concern but I see absolutely no reason to assume it will be the case, or that the tipping point that would enable this is just round the corner. People can respond in complex ways to these sorts of attacks, and that often includes a sense of not letting 'terrorists win' by changing certain 'values' in response to attacks.

Not sure why you would close the borders

To assert a higher level of control over your territory and who enters and leaves in a crisis? It makes it harder for anyone involved in the planning but not directly in the action to flee for example. It's a sensible step to take (from the State's perspective), but it'll probably be relaxed pretty quickly.

Look at how close the polling is

This is fucking tragic and scary, I fear we may be seeing Europe's 9/11 in the way that we'll be living with the results of this for years to come.

Possibly, but more probably like previous attacks it will be forgotten soon enough. 190 Died in Madrid in the 2004 train bombings, but it's not something we think about that much. And despite being around at the time of 7/7 I can't say that the fear of being blown up blights my journey to work every day. People outside the European bubble put up with far worse on a daily basis and still manage to carry on with their lives.
