Local Elections 2023

Should have the Worthing results in the next half an hour or so, meanwhile The Argus is reporting rumours that the Tories are in trouble right across West Sussex, with majorities in three district councils - Chichester, Mid Sussex and Horsham - at risk, these are all wealthy mainly rural areas, the whole county used to be a solid blue wall.

The two borough councils - Crawley and Worthing - went to Labour control last year and they are expected to make further gains in both, Adur has no elections this year, and the Tories lost overall control of Arun (which includes Littlehampton & Bognor Regis) in 2019, so to lose overall control in these other three councils would be a massive blow for the Tories, if that turns out to be true.

Worthing is a council where Momentum have put in a lot of effort. Well done

anti sea sewage vote perhaps

Probably played into it, but that's a massive gain in votes, probably mainly down to wanting to hurt the Tories, but being too posh to vote Labour.

There's two wards in Goring-by-Sea, both with 3 seats, which had been solid Tory, Goring [south] is now 2 Tories & 1 Green, and north of the railway line in Castle [Goring] all 3 have gone to Labour.

Nimby stuff in the area maybe? new houses, roads etc?

There was a threat of development on the Goring Gap, but both Labour & Tories were against that, the Tories had refused planning permission, but the Planning Inspectorate over ruled them, the Tories started High Court action to reverse that, Labour continued with that action when the took over the council last year, and the action was successful.

Basically every party would do their utmost to prevent Goring Gap being developed, no other nimbly stuff in play.

Didn’t vote yesterday. Not sure what the result is in Teignbridge, but I’m not really au fait with the standing of the council in the first place.

Wonder if my mate will be elected as a Lib Dem in Horsham

Wonder if my mate will be elected as a Lib Dem in Horsham

Very possible according to the Sussex World live Horsham results page.

The Conservatives are facing threats on two fronts, from the Lib Dems in and around Horsham as well as the Greens in the South Downs villages.

Firstly the Lib Dems have a solid base in Horsham town, but to win they need to make inroads in the two Holbrook seats and the villages near Horsham, namely: Southwater, Billingshurst, Itchingfield, Slinfold and Warnham, Rudgwick and Colgate and Rusper.
For the Greens they have a seat each in Steyning and Ashurst: Bramber, Upper Beeding and Woodmancote; and Storrington and Washington. Are they poised to hold what they have and gain several more?

Labour seem to be doing poorly in the West Midlands. They’ve lost two seats in Sandwell (albeit from a very high overall base), failed to win in Walsall and Dudley and it’s vote share hasn’t shifted much across the area.

Hardly the red wall returning to the fold….can’t be arsed to vote for any of them by far the most popular option.

The full results are in for my council (Tandridge) and, much as I expected, not much changed. It's still NOC with the independents holding the most seats. The Tories lost 2 (net) to the indies.

Labour won their first ever seat in the history of Worthing Borough Council in a 2017 by-election then in -
2018 they went up to 5 seats
2019 they doubled that to 10 seats
2020 West Sussex County Council elections cancelled due to covid
2021 they ended up with 15 seats / in the delayed County Council elections they gained their first ever seats in Worthing, taking 5 out of 9 seats.
2022 they took control with a whopping 23 seats, Tories on 12, LDs on 2.

Worthing had 12 seats up for grabs, 8 being defended by Labour and 4 by the Tories.

Labour holds - 8
Labour gains - 1
Green gains - 1
Tories loses - 2

So, Labour now has 24 seats, Tories 10, LDs 2, Greens 1.

That's a hell of a turn around in just a few years, prior to Labour winning their first ever seat in that 2017 by-election, it was 30 Tories, 4 LDs, 2 UKIP.
