The paperclip wasn't invented in Norway. It was patent protected in the US in 1867 but was in production in Britain in the 1870s. There's a Norwegian that invented a different design about 20 years after that but it never went into production, in Norway or anywhere else, because this design wasn't as efficient at securing paper as earlier designs.

The patriot stuff is apparently true although based on the false claim that the paperclip was invented in Norway.

ETA: there's a monument to the Norwegian inventor and the Norwegian Post Office also issued a stamp in his honour - both feature the earlier US/British design we know and love today, not his actual design.

Asked if he would now call a by-election, Mr Bridgen said there would be a general election next year and that he didn't want to put his constituents through "the rigour of having two elections in 12 months".

Good that he's thinking of his constituents and not himself.

Besides, here I live in a ward with 3 seats on the borough council, one is up for election each year, and on the fourth year I have the joy of the county councils election, before the cycle repeats again, it's a bit of a pain, but not a major problem.
