Laurence Fox. The twat.

When they put Trigger Nometry on that video do they mean they're triggered by everything?

Just because Britain was instrumental in the abolition of slavery it doesn't mean racism disappeared from that point onwards for crying out loud. Some people are breathtakingly wilfully ignorant. Christ.
Britain also needn’t be credited for dismantling something they constructed in the first place.
Like a domestic abuser expecting to be congratulated for stopping beating their partner

As I understand it, the British establishment only agreed to dismantle the slave trade because it was being outcompeted by the new American state so they thought it would allow them to sabotage the American economy.

It's a story that they (the racists, imperial nostalgists) like to tell themselves to avoid facing the ugly truth: namely, the uniquely brutal and dehumanising nature of chattel slavery and its continuing transgenerational effects on its descendants. An estimated 1.8 to 3 million Africans died in the middle passage. Also, when the slave trade was abolished, the slave owners were compensated and yet, when descendants of African slaves (I'm one of them) talk about reparations, we're told to fuck off. The dehumanisation continues.

It's the breathtaking chutzpah of these ultra-posh twats bollocking on about how the only people talking about systemic racism are "white middle class boys and girls" that gets me. He's a Harrow-educated nepo baby who managed the impressive trick of fucking up a career all but guaranteed by his family name ffs. The cast of Made in Chelsea are less privileged than that tool.

Well, he certainly didn't enter the acting business on the back of his natural talent. Had he not been born into a thespian dynasty, he'd be just another knuckle-dragger running with a pack of flag-shagging thugs.

tbf, Portuguese constructed the trans-Atlantic slave trade. Then Dutch, French and British muscled them out of the way before British came to dominate the trade.

There were a number of things that led to the British empire bringing the trans-Atlantic slave trade to the end. There's debates about which was the most important.

One of the biggest was industrialisation in Britain and the rise of modern capitalism. The new industrialists found that wage labour was more profitable and efficient than slave labour, so it was in their interests to fall in with the abolitionists. There was demand for produce from west Africa, like palm oil, for the new industries and access to those products took precedence over access to slaves, the trade in which led to instability in the region which was bad for business. There was an over supply of sugar from 'the colonies' which reduced the profitability of the slave trade.

Of course, official British history likes to point at the abolitionist movement, as that makes Britain look all heroic.

Well, it was done out of self interest, not some great philanthropic act is my main point.

And it continues today in the plutocracy of global capitalism. Maybe not in the US and UK. But elsewhere. Where the clothes you wear come from. Where the ships that bring you your things are broken on beaches. Where the finite metals powering the device in your hand are mined.
Those that have the capacity to help should. Reparations won’t work. But bringing countries up to speed so they are sustainable and self reliant without being exploited. May solve the issue of millions trying to get the fuck out of Africa and upsetting people should they be fortunate enough to make it this far.
Why are people leaving Africa in droves? There’s plenty of money being made there.
By European and American companies.

We can look to the past for the horrors of history whilst ignoring what is happening today which is exactly the same.

Why won't reparations work? I think it's quite disrespectful to outright reject reparations on, what appear to be, spurious grounds. There are all kinds of reparations and not all of them involve money. That said, the City of San Francisco currently support plans for reparations.
The more than 100 recommendations included payments of $5m to every eligible Black adult, the elimination of personal debt and tax burdens, guaranteed annual incomes of at least $97,000 for 250 years and homes in San Francisco for just $1 a family.

How's your history? Have you ever heard of the Scramble For Africa?

I meant it in a waythat,we know that conversation will drag on for ages. But the problem needs fixing now. They seem desperate to stop the boats without being willing to look at the root cause. Because of course that means reparations for current practices, not just backdated.

Love that he’s basically admitting his kids hate him here!

This Twitter post brings up something I wanted to highlight, because I keep seeing it in chud responses whenever the subject of children and consent comes up on Twitter. Basically, the idea is that children can't consent, therefore it's wrong to teach them that they can say "no" to an adult over anything.

The above Twitter post is an example. I think it's a dishonest over-generalisation of the idea that kids can't consent to sex or enter into a legal contract. I say dishonest, because the concept really shouldn't be that difficult to grasp. These people don't want their kids to be able to set boundaries, and that's really disturbing.
