that fucking latino butch marine bitch should have been jettisoned into space before they even touched down on the alien world.

Hey! Velasquez was one of the best characters IMO.

"Hudson: Hey Velasquez - have you ever been mistaken for a man?
Velasquez: No - have you?"

Classic Private Hudson. Courtesy of IMDB.

"They're coming outta the walls. They're coming outta the goddamn walls, we're fucked!"

"Oh dear Lord Jesus, this ain't happening, man... This can't be happening, man! This isn't happening!"

"Come on! Come on! Come and get it, baby! Come on! Let's go, yeah, come on! Come on! Come and get it you bastards! Come on, you too! Oh, you want some of this? Fuck you!"

The Ripley in Pneumatic suit type thing, and Alien Queen just looks daft now. Clunk, Clunk.... "Get away from her you BITCH!"

One of cinema's golden moments!

I could watch aliens over and over again, and have in fact.

Ripley leaves her pussy at home, cuts her hair short, gets tooled up with the biggest and most powerful artillery known to man and kicks alien ass. :D

IMO the main themes in the film are the good mother, the evil mother, and different aspects of femininty. Aliens in an incredibly subversive film.

From the butch Vasquez to Ripley rescuing a male marine who's twisted his ankle, to the sticky viscous mucousy alien queen, with her suffocating face grabbers and their androgenous egg implanting devices, gender roles are reversed and subverted throughout the film. It's a man, not a woman who gets hysterical and it's a woman who slaps him in the face.

Ripley's layers of 'self' are stripped away, her ship, her professional status, her daughter, her long hair, her clothes and dignity are stripped away before she makes a perilous descent to meet the alien queen in a scene that resonates with the mythical descent of the summerian godess Inanna to the underworld to visit the queen of the dead, Erishkigal

Psychotherapists consider the descent of Inanna to be a metaphor for the descent into depression (and connection with the internalised 'bad' mother) that people need to make to connect with infant trauma and conflict (some would call it connecting with the inner child). It is a heroic journey and Ripley's rescuing of the child Newt from the 'evil mother' is rich with mythic and psychoanalytic resonance.

Aliens is one of my all time favourite films, it's so much more than just a hollywood shoot em up

IMO :)

edited to add a link re the descent of Inanna (AKA Ishtar)

yes, well, you can over intellectualise about a hollywood shoot em up. :) If you want.

Ripley's idea of subverting feminity was cooked up in a man's mind, and does have sexual cues as to what might be deemed attractive by a male audience, indeed the person who dremaed up the persona of Ripley, the no nonsense bitch. It isn't the feminist role model, family criticism/subversion you are thinking of, in my opinion. It is a bit of a sham in that regard.

She might leave her pussy at home, but she has just been formed and reshaped by a man as to how a woman might take countrol of a situation, and fight with ideas of female sexuality and feminity.

Fuck this shit, bring on Hudson.

so what?
just because the film had male screenplay writers doesn't mean that film doesn't have subversive aspects does it?

gremlims was probably cooked up by a man too but also contained funny and scary elements re gender subversion.

I'm not saying that Ripley's a feminist role model, just pointing out the fact that Aliens was a very subversive film in relation to gender, it's pretty bleedin obvious to anyone

other than that you're just wrong :p

Subjective opinion is fine, and here is mine.

Ripley is not some future galactic shakti out to deconstruct, restoe and protect elements of her and humanity's feminity. It is just a hollywood gun fest, spattered with acid and screaming marines.

it is not that I don't recgonise the gender aspects of the film, indeed all of them, the films, it is just in my opinion I don't want to dwell or place a huge amount of significance onto them. Not in the way you are going anyway.

So there. :)

No Louloubelle, it's got guns and explosions so it's obviously a 'boys' film. You just don't get it.

I'm glad a woman came along to show what the film was really about. Ryazan's reaction just proves your point about subverting gender roles.

I agree, the whole film is steeped in the identity politics of the 80s, don't know about the underworld, splitting and all that caper but thanks for pointing that out.

That's cos you is a bloke innit and it suits your dominant paradigm to ignore it. If on the other hand you is interested in becoming a 'whole person', well you would be right down there in the underworld with tha sistas

What reaction?

That I don't take seriously the poncy ponderings on feminity in a sc-fi shoot em up? It isn't that I don't recognise them. Yoju know this, you just want to cause trouble. :)

I know enough about seruious feminism, written by women, to dismiss the cod gender politics/comment of James Cameron's Aliens.

She might leave her pussy at home...

I thought that Riplay's pussy was very much part of the focus of the first two films...? It keeps bounding around setting off movement alarms, etc. Wasn't it called Jones...?

So obviously Ripley is a lesbian. Who else would take a cat into space...?

It is not in the second film.

Doesn't Ripleys ginger pussy nearly get eaten by the queen? Its why Ripley runs off looking for it near the end of the film...

Sorry?

She leaves the cat at the gateway space station orbiting earth. The cat hisses at Ripley's stomach as something beins to protrude out of it in a nightmare. the cat makes no appearence later on in the second film.

the pussy is on the Nostromo, but she leaves him back home in Aliens

well why not enlighten us with a well thought out response mr feminist?

just calling my thoughts on the issuie 'cod' and 'poncey' doesn't count as debate.

the gender themes in the film are hardly covert, they're central the the film, and were commented on by numerous reviewers

you can choose to ignore them if you want, you can disagree with them if you choose to debate the issue, or you can just dismiss it a 'poncy' or 'cod' and end up looking like you don't have to prerequisite intelligence to make a meaningful comment

the choice is yours :)
