Lambeth Country Show 2019 - free entry with the Great Wall Of Brockwell back for another year

After nearly 20 years of going to Lambeth Country Show, last year's installation of The Great Wall made the festival such a disappointment and lacking in atmosphere that I'm not going to bother with it any more..

In 2017 75% of people surveyed rated the show as Very Good, which dropped to 24% in 2018.

Only 47% of people said they would return next year compared to 91% in 2017.
Ouch.

In a context of organisers who wanted to encourage people to come to an event and be happy and recommend it to other people, that would be considered a complete disaster and heads would be rolling. But maybe maybe that isn’t what Lambeth are aiming for.

They are in the process of turning it into a completely different event that will become ticketed and then run privately.
That is what the fence is for
Oh of course.

*no changes made despite wall clearly being massively unpopular*
2019: attendance massively down
"Due to reduced attendance and revenue, as well as on police advice which somehow we can't ever reveal and the police deny, we will need to charge an entrance fee in 2020 via our private sector partner ParkExploiterCo as well as increasing fees on stallholders"

Start saving your pennies.

The great Lambeth Country Show booze rip-off as local breweries asked to fork out £2,000 just to be involved

“The installation of the perimeter fence has given the event a safe community festival feel.

Secondly, the fence had also created a festival mentality, with those attending much more likely to follow pathways, directional signs and to create safe zones unlike the previous year where the effect of the open space was minimal.

One key aspect highlighted by the respondents who were surveyed at the show, was that the event felt more like a festival than ever before and this was supported by the crowd shape, lack of major issues and the flow through the park.”

One of the best things about the LCS was precisely that it DID NOT feel like a "festival". It was a really unique event and the fence and the changes will make it feel like pretty much any other festival.

No getting away from it - it will be a ticketed event before long. A new crowd will go who never knew what it was like before and that will be that. Us moany old bastards will just have to make our own fun :D

Only 0.65% of the attendees actually responded to the survey so it's a bit difficult to claim those figures are representative of very much!

Plenty of local comment to be heard here, on social media and in real life though, and none of it was particularly positive.

Oh sure!
I also rather like this particularly stupid made up comment:
"A large knife was found just outside the footprint of the show. Likely that this was thrown or stashed when the carrier saw the entrances and searching." That's just absolute bullshit :D

So I've heard that at least one local music act was expected to perform for free. The act has had a fair bot of press recently too, so it's a right pisstake.

The usual Love Lambeth pr guff:

Love Lambeth
The fantasy:
Cllr Jack Hopkins, Leader of Lambeth Council, said: “The Lambeth Country Show is a South London institution and one of the biggest free family events in the whole country. Every year it never fails to impress and I’m really excited for this year’s edition, with so much on offer for people of every age it’s a weekend that brings the whole Lambeth community together, showcasing the best of our borough

The reality:
In 2017 75% of people surveyed rated the show as Very Good, which dropped to 24% in 2018.

Only 47% of people said they would return next year compared to 91% in 2017.
Lambeth Country Show 2019 stays free but controversial fence to remain as satisfaction levels plummet

Oh, the fun!

There will be a full perimeter fence around the show site and extra security measures in place throughout the event once again. Everyone attending the show will be subject to mandatory searches on entry so you are advised to allow extra time to get in. Please be aware of the prohibited items listed on the Terms & Conditions section of our website for full information on what you can and can’t bring in to the show with you. CCTV will be in operation throughout the show and park.

That's last years isn't it?
that bit marked with the discovery area will be hard to use - the grass is churned up to ankle breaking depths.

The fence is OTT but I reckon the biggest turnoff for many last year will have likely been the strict ‘no alcohol from outside allowed’ policy. Compounded by the upmarket pub booze prices inside.

Nothing beats sitting down on the grass and watch the world go by, or enjoy live music on an event like this. But a lot of people cannot afford- or even if they can will still be severely pissed off by the thought of- spending £12- £18 per person to enjoy 2-3 drinks during the day, when up until last year they had the option to do it for £2-3.

If the festival can no longer be funded in its present form without either heavy dependence on revenue from traders or a paid admission, they should scale it down a bit instead. Better a lower profile free and relaxed event than a full bells and whistles event that becomes unaffordable for many.

Fencing these events seems to be more and more extensive. I don't know this one, but the "Hoppings" on the Town Moor in Newcastle have been fenced off for many years, and partly to keep people out of the operators vans and "backstage" - I stopped going some years ago at the height of the bag searches and can't take liquids in phase, so I've no idea what the situation is like now - 21st to 29th June - in 2019 - I might try and find out ...

Does any one know what the Borough Safety Advisory group is?
Have they publish any figures for attendance last year?
Are they going to bus in the "experienced security staff" from the other side of the country again?

Its been meeting for a while. A very keen person called Peter Lennard did a FOI request in 2018 and got this. Don't download and read unless you want to read pages and pages about such things as Moonwalk and Let's Rock 2018.
Nothing up to date, and (disappointingly) nothing about the unpopular measures at last year's Country Show.

I didn't go last year. Is there anything on the music stages that looks good enough to brave it? Didn't see any reggae greats on the line up unless I missed something.
