Is Elon Musk the greatest visionary or the greatest snake oil salesman of our age?

Oh for fuck's sake, not the old "we shouldn't do space stuff before solving each and every problem on Earth" nonsense. The two go hand in hand, or at least they should. Getting our mineral resources from asteroids and moving our manufacturing into space would solve multiple environmental problems, for a start.

I do kinda feel that way..

I do, i know its a bit selfish but i do think its best to finish a job before moving on..

Its very risky to heading of into the unknown.
The world/Earth could be really lovely and cosy if we all pull together..

Humanity wasn't pulling together when those living in Asia crossed the Bering Strait into the virgin lands of the Americas, or when the Polynesians colonised the Pacific islands. A lot of critics of human space exploration like to draw comparisons with the taming of the Wild West, but they never seem to mention those two other, much longer, periods of history in which humans were pushing boundaries.

Would making good spoons on Venus with iron ore mined from an asteroid relly do that much to save the environment?

Why the fuck would you make anything on Venus? It's at the bottom of a gravity well almost as strong as Earth's. What you do is put the factories in Earth orbit.

Imagine that job, an iron ore factory in earth orbit.. i worry for the future of the poor...

The way things are going now, the robots will have already taken all the poor peoples' jobs by that point anyway. Any humans still involved in the process at that point will be highly-trained specialists raking in danger pay like oil rig workers, not some Stakhanovite caricatures.

I'd go to a Spoons on Venus, when's curry night?

The robots...???

them same robots that work in iron ore factory in india?

India has cheap labour and a breathable atmosphere that comes for free. But that labour is not going to stay cheap forever, and it's been the case for a couple of decades already that many Indian workers have skills (such as a reasonable grasp of English) which are useful to service providers in countries like the UK and US. Hence all that outsourcing business.

Well lets all move to mars then. Cause Labours not going to stay cheap forever.. we can deplete that place of resources with robots who work for free.. Yes wicked idea bro.. Ill blast my red car up there too see if its ok by the worlds leaders before we go in....

Anything mined on Mars will most likely be for local consumption, at least for the foreseeable future. You're forgetting that Mars, like Venus, is a planet and thus there is a significant energy cost in getting stuff into orbit. Whereas asteroids, because they are too small to have any appreciable gravity, require less energy to take stuff from them.

Amazing facts, yes amazing! science is a true gift .. Amen

Taming the wild West, otherwise known as genocide of the native American people.

Yes, that was my point. The settlement of space will be more like the kind of settlement done by the Polynesians or the Bering Strait crossers, due to there being no natives to crush underfoot.

Isn't Weinstein a fat cunt? His disgusting bulk should have been noticeable under the suit.

Weinstein is a rapist, that is what makes him disgusting, not his physical build. If you have an aversion to fat people perhaps you should seek medical help rather than spewing up your prejudices here
