independence for Greenland?

If the Greenlanders join the US, it'll be by their own choice
Not involuntarily bound to a white, racist nation by the conquest of the Viking sword...

Sure, I'm not arguing in favour of Greenland retaining its colonial connections to Denmark, I just can't see them giving up one colonial master only to jump into the arms of another.

You and others might be interested in this, much of which was news to me.

That is excellent! Thank you for posting it. I definitely learned a lot

No group is more interested in, and will do so more greedily, in exploiting Greenland than Denmark & the EU...

If you would explain that, I'd be greatly appreciative

My understanding is that Greenland is independent and autonomous, and only remains voluntarily within the " Danish Commonwealth"
Are you saying Greenland would need Denmark's "permission" to become a territory of USA?
I think denmark still controls things like defense, foriegn policy and currency from what i read. Probably simalar to scotland in the uk. Edit - seen the wiki link now.

I think after germany occupied denmark in ww2, the usa occupied greenland and uk occupied iceland (which was still danish at the time). Obviously handed back at the end.

Trade security for a share of the nation's natural wealth

What does Denmark & the EU offer Greenland?
One thing i can think of is, I don't know what denmarks healthcare system is like but i suspect its better than americas. Then again i don't know if they have access to it.

The EU? Not a lot. It's not a member. Denmark? An annual subsidy. Healthcare, social security, that kind of shit.

This is not to say that Denmark does not have a shameful, racist record in Greenland. Like Canada, Australia, and other countries, it has a vile record of horrific practices such as forced adoptions dating back as recently as the 1970s. But that has changed for the better in recent decades and Greenland now has far greater autonomy.

The question here would be how much real autonomy a nominally 'Independent' Greenland would have. Quite possibly less than it has currently given the USA's ambitions. You can bet your arse that the US would invent an excuse to step in and save Greenlanders from ... imagined threat.

What about access to the protection of the US Navy?, as opposed to, for instance, the Danish puddle patrol force?
Well in a hyperthetical referendum in greenland on the issue they would have to decide on their priorities. I think the usa does already have a base in greenland (which is probably useful the usa as well as greenland and denmark).

Right, yes, Greenland is a prime target for the rest of the world. Perhaps it ought to have its own nuclear programme, given that there are so many states (other than the USA) that are threatening to invade it. Or perhaps it should ally with the People's Republic of China.

Denmark is the racist, exploitative devil they know.

Amalgamation with the US has loads of upside for Greenland

or they could make a much more rational, thoughtful choice than the darkly comedic options you offer the Greenlanders
