In praise of M&S cabbage greens

I've never really been much for cabbage but - Gordon Bennett! - I've become hooked on M&S's cabbage greens.

I can often get a big pack discounted at the end of the day for around a quid, drop the in the microwave, add salt, pepper, vegan butter and maybe some cheese too and it's ruddy delicious with an escalope, pie or whatever.

That is all.

I think they are what the greengrocer used to call Brussels tops. After some brassica are harvested, a cross is cut in the top of the plant and there is a secondary growth to be harvested

The Brussell tops form naturally , however, you are right that a cross cut on the stem of any brassica will give second growth

Never even heard of these or the others, and pretty sure Asda don’t sell em. But love savoy cabbage so would like to try. Bit wary of cavalo Nero cos it looks a bit iron rich like spinach and I struggle with that unless it’s mixed with cheese

I lurrrve cabbage. I kept forgetting to get it all the time though, but making a determined effort this winter. The bag does look just like shredded spring greens though.

Get one of those thin serrated tomato knives off Amazon , roll the leaf like a cigar and off you go . All my neighbours do it that way .
That’s interesting, I’ll try that. In Porto everyone we knew used the slicer, but I’m sure others did it differently.

I used to live on stir-fried white cabbage, but these days I tend to go for the fancier offshoots - some of which because they cook fast, some because they cook slowly...
It is my theory that even boiled to death school cabbage could fix the diets of millions...

I need to get some cabbage/greens soon, it's been a while.
I like it pretty much "as is", and OH loves colcannon.
Requires planning a couple of meals around a head of cabbage though.

Bloody hell Aldi had sprouts for 19p a bag - though there were a rew duff ones in the bags, and I had a fair few - now they're 87p... :p

I persevere somewhat with red cabbage - it's cheap and very nutritious.

Just saw these M&S cabbage greens in Ocado - £160 for 200g! Seems like they took a 60p cabbage, sliced it up, put it in a plastic bag and whacked a quid on.

Love red cabbage pickled or in salads or braised. I've grown red Brussel Sprouts but to my mind, there isn't any significant taste difference between them and green sprouts .On the other hand red cabbage to me has a more dense possibly peppery taste than white or green cabbage.

If I'm making any sort of slaw, 90% of the time it will be a red cabbage version

It's basically kale. Rip the leaves of the stems and steam/boil and quick stir fry with garlic and lemon juice or soy sauce. Or just boil it lots and pour gravy on.

The only problem with the steam/fry method is shrinks loads, so great for getting lots in you but it's dead expensive in the supermarkets and I'm still spoiled from when my partner had a farm and ran a veg box scheme.
