Bulb energy - UK's biggest green supplier - becomes Octopus energy

So Bulb will be taking £81 on Monday....but I'm really tight financially.......and £115 in credit with them.
Should I just cancel the direct or phone them and ask them to use the credit. If they refuse I'll just change supplier and they can use the credit....thoughts?

I would do a comparison if possible and then give them a call. Definitely would speak to them rather than cancelling straight off . They basically did the same to me and so we left and then switched with them having to payback the credit we already had.

You have to cancel a direct debit at least one working day in advance so if you're going to cancel it you'll have to do it in the next hour. I'm in the process of changing supplier and it takes about 10 days to switch so it'll be too late to stop them on that front. I'd phone them. What they will say is that the credit will cover increased use over the winter so they might not say yes but it's a worth a go.

Ah didn't know that about DD.

Giving them a call anyway to say things are tight might help and they can put you on a different DD plan depending on what your personal circumstances are and how long you may feel you're going to feeling a financial crunch. These sort of companies while still wanting their money are usually accommodating to personal circumstances if you haven't been taking the piss previously.

If they won't change the DD amount, I think you'd have the right to request they refund you the credit balance. I'm a bit hazy on details but assume they would have to agree as it's your money.

I would so call them but they don't make it easy and the automated chat bot is not cutting it.
Couldn't find a no and time was of the essence....so...I've cancelled the dd. Its all good, they have £115 of mine. I've also submitted a meter reading in case I decide to change.

Also their reasoning that the credit is to help bills over the winter is suspect as usually they just put your dd up ime

I had a similar issue with them over the summer when I wasn't earning and objected to paying £55 when £100 in credit and only using £20 / month

They didn't take the DD that month. I'm about to move house now and will not be taking Bulb in my new property based on this experience.

I’ve left Bulb because of their shitty policy about this stuff. I didn’t find them accommodating at all.

They contacted me to say I was running up my bill because my DD was too low. They also told me how much it would be, which was more than double what I’d been paying.

I told them I was struggling financially. They said okay, so then we pass you onto a third party who will offer you a financial plan.

I told them I didnt want to enter any kind of financial contract with a third party. They said tough shit, those are your only options.

I explained the maths to them, because it was quite clear that I’d catch up over the summer. They said they’d escalate it if I didn’t either pay more, or agree to the third party contract.

So I fucked them off.

They then started sending me endless emails apologising for something I hadn’t complained about, while never addressing the points I actually raised with them, and then about 7 requests by email, text and phone to stay with them, plus another four survey and feedback requests asking why I was leaving and what they could do better, every one of which I answered as politely as possible while referring them back to previous emails, complaints, correspondences and survey answers that had all said the exact same thing.

I like do them for about four months and disliked them increasingly by over the following 9 months.

I’ve now signed up with lookaftermybills.com , who have switched me to Green, and I’m already saving about 40% on my bills.

My only issue now is that my nasty abusive prick ex ‘s surname is Green so I jump out of my skin every time I get an email from the gas&leccy people.

I know I can get a cheaper supplier so I may as well change now.

Quite surprised by the comments above as Bulb have adjusted my payments several times, of their own accord, to take into account trends in my energy usage, and to make sure I'm not too much in credit with them.

I wonder if they are struggling to be honest, but they have badly misplayed over the last few months. I was in a fair amount credit and even if I went into debit over winter so fucking what? They can owe me money, but heaven forbid I owe a similar amount.

Exactly.

And I was in credit with them when I left too.

I don’t expect them to be a long term member of the utilities crowd tbh.

By the way, if anyone wants an introductory offer incentive thing for lookaftermybills.com, I think I have a couple knocking about at the back of the email cupboard,

I wonder why I didn’t get this same service?

Maybe my credit rating is shot?

Similar experience for me. I've always really liked Bulb's transparency about their fees and how it's all calculated. It suits me to build up credit in summer, and I like that I can change my DD to whatever I want within reason. I like that I can submit my own readings each month and only get charged what I actually use rather than estimates which leave me with (usually nasty) surprises. I know I could save £100 a year by going elsewhere, but having used and hated Eon for years, it feels good to continue using a provider that has actually made paying for my gas and leccy easy.

I recently switched from Ecotricity to Octopus. It took ages for the final bill to come through from Ecotricity. Because it was over the summer I switched it turned out I received £500 back. A bit shocking since I didn’t know how much I was in credit. Worth switching just to keep the companies keen!

£106 in credit

I leave Bulb next Wednesday, due to house selling. Normal Bill £50/ month even in winter. I cancel direct debit as it goes out on the 24th.

They write to me threatening an admin charge.

Utter wankers

How do they compare on tariffs?

Yes I had that threat too when I stopped my DD. I wanted to actually speak to them, but it proved almost impossible and the chat bot is too general.
In the end I set up another DD for the 22nd of this month and my £115 credit will leave me owing them £11.
But yeh will change supplier soon.

Fair play. I've found Ecotricity good though - quite happy with them.

I’m paying 2.068 p/kWh for gas from EDF. I got a quote from Ecotricty before switching and they wanted 4.284 p/kWh. I could almost build my own wind farm with that difference so it didn’t give me a good impression of them. Perhaps I was unlucky and chose a bad time to get a quote or something.

don't have gas though, only eleccy. I was stopped in the street one time by someone wanting me to change tariffs. They asked who I was with and when I told them they said - ah I won't bother you then it's only the large suppliers who people can save by moving away from.

Must check my tariff though :hmm:

I’m thinking about leaving Bulb. No particular complaint just I’m sure I could be getting a better deal elsewhere.

Who are the energy company du jour then?

I’m now with Green Suppliers Ltd

Lookaftermybills.com do it all for me these days.

I’ve got a sign up incentive thingy if anyone wants to try them.
(Lookaftermybills. Not Green)

Do they not just give you the cheapest rate?

Yes.
I told them I only wanted eco firms and they switched me over right away (obviously they ran it past me first...). It really was dead easy, and their system will check my tariff for me in ? 12 months. Or sooner if I ask them to.

So far, Green is taking about half what Bulb was taking from me.

But that’s because by Bulb insisted I pay twice what I was paying, as I said up-thread. Which is why I left them.
