How do I clean a microwave?

The enamel is Japanese quality on these microwaves (good quality) so chances are that it is baked on crud rather than rust so I would just clean it and have no more fuss and palaver.

I disagree, you can see how the enamel has bubbled-up & split, resulting in rust.

Nope, it's rust.

The previous "works" cheapie one looked like that, even after a good clean ...
and it was replaced by another cheap one, with "keep it clean, or else " instructions a few months ago.

And, having been into restoration for several decades, I think that I should be able to tell the difference between baked on crud & rust by now !

I tried uploading it in higher resolution if that makes a difference to anyones opinion - photo file size was 5.6meg rather than 900kb

I also think it's rust, but try scratching gently round the biggest cruddy looking bit

if the black stuff chips off, then it's crud

if the white paint chips off then it's rust

Mine did that. I only noticed when I saw sparks under the microwave.

Ha. I put a metal thing in the microwave once. It was curry in a bag but I had assumed (wrongly) it was like one of those plastic rice bags.

left it going whilst I went to the loo but could hear sizzling. Came back into the kitchen and there were super bright white sparks even I could see easily. And a smell of hot metal (turns out the bag was partially made of foil.) The sparks sscarred the inside of the screen I discovered later.

But I did tip the curry into a bowl and put it back in...
