Microwave turntable motor replaced.

But no earth!
Well, TBF, with the residual current protection, that's not quite the, ahem, burning issue it can be here.

And, also, most French plug receptables (type E) DO have an earth pin (yes, pin, not socket), even if a lot of appliances only have a 2-pin plug. Most installed Type C (no earth) sockets will be there from before regulations were updated to mandate an earth connection, and any rewire would require Type E sockets to be installed.

Faced with rewiring my house I accidentally ended up watching a Canadian lineman's channel for a bit and ended up worried about nasties coming in with the mains especially with overhead power... I suspect that if I make it to Rural France I will not only want lightning protection and surge arrestors but will run my electronics from solar / battery sooner rather than later ...

That's probably a good idea - France certainly does seem to experience a lot of thunderstorms when compared to the UK, and especially in rural areas power distribution is via overhead lines, which are (obviously) particularly susceptible. But you'll want to get a proper industrial-strength arrestor on the incoming supply, not the stupid 4-ways which claim to provide lightning protection.
