Quite a confused list I would say, possibly dangerously so. A lot of those sites are simply opinion sites - zerohedge or nakedcapitalism for example. You may not like the opinions, but they're not really pretending to be anything else. They are neither news, nor fake. They are real opinions. Confusing news sites with opinion sites does not really clear up confusion about what and who we can trust online - quite the opposite. If from time to time an opinion site puts out something that looks like 'news' that you don't agree with (as zerohedge might), it should be judged as what it is - the output of an opinion site, rather than the output of a news provider. I understand that the line between these two can be blurred, but I'm not sure that refusing to make a distinction between the two at all is helpful.

There's some good sites on that list, a lot of fragglery too but, you know... the Cathedral and the Bazaar an all that. The propornot one was better because handily they broke it up into Left wing versus Right wing sites, so you don't have to pick through the more conspiraloony/alt-right/pixies and aliens stuff.

Was quite pleased to find some of my bookmarks on it really, consortiumnews, blackagendareport, sott... recently discovered this blog recommended by the list:charles hugh smith-Weblog and Essays. Not sure about it yet and it's a bit book-floggy (guys gotta make a living I suppose) but liked the article.

Of course... it's not really about identifying 'fake news', it's just a fresh lick of paint on the garden fence, get rid of all that rude graffiti.

How is this list "handy"? Am I supposed to carry it in my pocket and scan through it every time I come across an article published by an organisation I'm not familiar with?

Well I did say a few would be "debatable", and where better to debate such matters??

While brainaddict may have a point that a few are just mad opinion sites I would like to see people say which sites in that list are reliable news sources.

rt.com is on the list, you probably don't like rt but feel free to post details where rt has been shown to have produced 'fake news'. wikileaks isn't a 'news' site exactly but their thing is what Assange calls (Scientific journalism - Wikipedia) where everything they post is backed up with documentary evidence... well the documents themselves being their 'news' really.

'Fake News' is basically just a term for stuff people say or report that those who run the corporate media organizations and political establishment in the West don't like. Fingers in ears- nar nar nar news.

Would you prefer alternative facts?
I think there's nothing wrong with the word 'lie' , when it comes to actual lies. Cos facts do exist, and lies exist, and 'fake news' kind of blurs that. Then there's propaganda and biased reporting and all the loon rainbow of people writing stuff to get their message across. Anyway, looks like the daily mail isn't even on that list. And apparently half of Americans go to facebook to get their 'news', so that should be on there.

I see what's happened here, you've mistaken opinion about events for the existence or not of the events themselves. Trump does exist, there really is a war in Ukraine, and there is an airline called Malaysian Airlines in which one aircraft went missing and another was shot down.

I see infowars.com in the list. I know it's drivel but I thought they were being invited to white house press conferences under the new leader.

And we all know, who shot it down.

And we all know, who shot it down.

Not really, there's certainly a prevailing narrative. I find conspiracies to do with aircraft annoying as fuck though so I wont be getting into all that. Feel free to investigate why doubters have their doubts for yourself. If the East Ukrainians did shoot the aircraft down or not- it's another tragedy on the pile of tragedies still ongoing (and recently escalated) in that pointless stupid cynical civil war.

How is that 'handy'?

'Fake News' is basically just a term for stuff people say or report that those who run the corporate media organizations and political establishment in the West don't like. Fingers in ears- nar nar nar news.

No, that is just one of many meanings being attached to the term. For example:

There is the relatively 'pure' meaning which refers to news that is easily demonstrated to be totally fake, the authors know it is fake and it and is spread for propaganda purposes.

There is the greyer area of distorted news, conspiracy theories, opinion posing as fact etc.

There is Trump & Co's very calculated attempts to misappropriate the term and use it to refer to the mainstream media when it reports facts he doesnt like.

And there is the pehnomenon which you describe, which I am not seeking to pretend is not part of the picture at all, but its very misleading to write the entire term off as simply being the mainstream not liking it when others put a different spin on things. For example the idea that people would rely less on 'quality news' was a concern for ages now and I remember reading papers last decade which listed this as a concern for states in the future. And the reasons for this concern are a mix of things - on the one hand something resembling what you are talking about where what was feared was a loss of information & propaganda mainstream virtual monopoly, with associated loss of control and influence. But also a legitimate concern based on the history of what shitty paths people can be lead down when they take rumours based on prejudice and things like 'yellow journalism' as fact.

There is the relatively 'pure' meaning which refers to news that is easily demonstrated to be totally fake, the authors know it is fake and it and is spread for propaganda purposes.
Yeah. That's called a lie.
The rest of your post describes things that have been going on for centuries and the term 'fake news' helps nobody see more clearly. Elders of Zion anyone? The echochambers which the internet has made possible is an important & interesting subject but 'fake news' is a trumpish word and of no help to anyone.
The Term “Fake News” Has Already Lost Its Meaning

The rest of your post describes things that have been going on for centuries and the term 'fake news' helps nobody see more clearly. Elders of Zion anyone? The echochambers which the internet has made possible is an important & interesting subject but 'fake news' is a trumpish word and of no help to anyone.

It's not just the echo-chamber effect. It's also the speed and the international reach. Both of which are things that started before the internet-related phenomenon went mainstream, via rolling 24 hour news channels which contributed to a decline in quality and analysis, and an increase in global competition between states for influence over the public mind. Obviously the latter existed before in the form of state radio broadcasts to overseas territories of interest, but its arguably more vulgar these days.

In terms of the outrage and concern expressed by mainstream media and states towards internet rumour/conspiracy/fake news, in the old days they found it much easier to ignore the realities of informal news and rumour because the bulk of it was seldom committed to print/the written word. Now what used to be largely verbal chatter between the masses is far more likely to end up written down on social media etc. In that one sense the gap between the reality of how the masses view things and the reported news has actually shrunk, at least in the sense that the former is better acknowledged by the latter. Yes I am oversimplifying this and there have always been exceptions in the form of pamphlets, minor publications and suchlike, not to mention in the USA there has long been a tradition of 'alternative opinions and realities' expressed via a plethora of local radio stations.

Missed out BBC, Sky and all the mainstream news outlets that have been caught with their pants down more than once.

But then, that list is probably a good place to go to get actual news that's being swept under the carpet. You'll have to sort the wheat from the chaff, but there'll be some good shit on some of them I'm sure.

Also...no lunatic outpost or conspiracy outpost on that list.

Also, in5d is on that list, that's just a spiritual/meditation sort of place, with no news at all, fake or otherwise. So it's basically trying to braindish anything non mainstream as fake.

edit #4234 - youtube should probably be on that list too, as half of the fake news videos are posted on it.

Russian drunk mercenaries shot it down. Overwhelming evidence leads me to this conclusion.
