Individuals, as well as businesses, bars etc are all desperate to find personal and bulk stocks of hand sanitisers. The official advice is that they need to have 60% alcohol or more.

Please post up any details of stocks you find!

The World Health Organization has published a guide to producing hand sanitizer from widely available chemicals. Such hand sanitizer may be used in situations where commercially produced hand sanitizer is unavailable. According to this guide, to produce 10 liters of hand sanitizer, the following are mixed together, and topped up with distilled or cold boiled water to 10 liters:

i ordered supplies from amazon last week to make my own (youtube), a lot of it was sold out though.

That said "apparently" soap works just as well.

I ordered isopropyl alcohol off the internet long after the shops had run out of hand sanitiser. Either buy 70% or 99% and dilute down to 70 with water.

I should have some of this arriving today. Also accidentally bought way too much propylene glycol/vegetable glycerin for my vape, so I'm wondering if I can dilute the isopropyl alcohol in the pg/vg blend. :hmm:

Isopropyl alcohol for choice, If you buy ethanol, albeit to make hand sanitizer, you will pay the duty on it. 8333ml of 96% is going to be about the price of 17 bottles of vodka.

Soaps more effective if you wash your hands properly. Hand sanitizer is only really good if you cant wash your hands immediately or if people are unlikely to wash their hands for example visiting hospitals. People think hand sanitizer is really effective because they see it in clinical settings. But it's only any good as a stop gap until you can get to wash your hands properly. It's better than nothing by a long way but it's nowhere near as good as washing your hands properly with soap and hot water.

As I posted elsewhere, pure aloe vera won't gel in alcohol - even with added glycerol - you need carbomer (Polyacrylic acid ) - so people are using things like "Bahama Balm apres-soleil" (I think "banana Boat" is the same stuff) which has only a token amount of aloe vera ... have considered adding dijon mustard and perhaps a little oil ... also I'm curious about Carboxymethyl cellulose ...

I may try adding a little Body Shop shower gel ...

Woman at work says on her local FB groups someone has posted that they bought hand sanitizer in one of the pound shops and when they got home realised it only had 20% alcohol in it so it's worth paying attention before you buy anything.

Our work is in the hand sanitizer market and we're hearing a lot of companies are in the process of bringing over massive quantities from Turkey and China in the next fortnight. We passed on it because it won't have the same testing and certification as ours.

I'm presuming that the 70% alcohol is going to best used for spraying surfaces/doorhandles and the like.
Want to know this too. I've not been able to score any portable hand sanitizer stuff yet but I have purchased big box of .. these.

They are tiny little things but i hope they are a good solution for wiping down the (non waterproof) phone when I've used it out before handwashing?

It does but you can hardly hang soap on the walls of businesses and expect people to being along their own bucket of water.

I dunno.

Carrying a small bar of soap (like the ones you nick from hotels) and a bottle of water (which many people carry anyway) shouldn't be a stretch for "most people" if necessary.

Leave the other stuff for the few that can't.

Should you really be stockpiling medical supplies for home use in the middle of a pandemic?

And not effective - from what I've seen it does need to be 60 to 80% strength to be effective (you probably know this though).
only just learned about that.
Though thinking about it mine has 33 percent aloe vera gel which ended up as water plus cellulose pulp.
