Hackney chitter-chatter &tc

It's good that he's been suspended.

Aside from the horrible subject matter, that is quite a scoop for Novara (which isn't acknowledged in the Standard piece of course). Presumably they have connections with people in Hackney Labour...

Lots of questions still to be answered but there is a nasty echo of "Trotter gate" from the 1990s. Spin Doctors, Media and the Left

He's been suspended from the Labour Party, but because he was directly elected as Mayor, he remains in that position, at least for now...

None of them either.

Anyway:

The mayor said he knew of the arrest but not the extent of the charges. If someone I knew had been arrested I think I might ask them a question or two about the why. I'd expect an answer along the lines of assault PC or drugs or whatnot. Don't know why Glanville didn't make enquiries, or why he didn't seek to elicit more information either from the person who told him or from his friend. After all, while I would be largely unconcerned about friends being nicked as pretty much all of them have been for demo or drug related things, as a fairly senior Labour party member learning about a newly elected Councillor who he had shared his house with being nicked by the nca, I'd expect more inquisitiveness lest there be some impact on the rep of the Labour party even if child porn hadn't been involved. I'd certainly want to know more if it transpired they hadn't done something on a demo or drugs but it involved computers being away.

He probably just assumed he was done for tagging the 254.

Fuck, even as someone not in the public eye and shaping policy, I'd distance myself from a mate with such images on their drive. I'd feel disgusted and would probably question my own lack of judgement...
yeh if i found out it was something to do with cp then they'd be gone from my life.

I don't want to appear to be defending the Mayor, but as a more general point, if you know someone has been arrested, but they tell you it was for something minor like tagging the 254, I'm not sure how responsible you as an individual can be considered if it turns out they were actually charged with something much more serious.

Sure but he was informed about the arrest by the Chief Exec who presumably didn't lie about what it was about.

Also saying he didn't know the full extent of the charges implies he had some idea of the area being investigated, otherwise he'd surely have said he didn't know what the arrest was about. It stinks really.

Yeah, I'm not trying to defend him and I agree it stinks. Just trying to understand who actually had the full truth about the arrest.

My next question would be how does the Chief Exec* know what he's been arrested for? Would the Police have informed him, or is it again dependent on the accused councillor telling the truth?

*Interestingly, I think we're talking about the now-former Chief Exec, who left in somewhat opaque circumstances...

Dunno but would the police be obliged to inform the Council as his employer(?) due to safeguarding stuff/potential access to children through his role? I know someone whose partner was arrested for similar and because she worked with children, she had to inform her employer IIRC even though she kicked him out immediately.

It's a murky world, local politics. :(

I'd expect a person I lived / had lived with and who I had doubtless sponsored as a Councillor to regale me with stories of jolly tagging japes plus I don't think the cops would have bothered to contact the chief executive of the council with it if it was a matter of relatively minor criminal damage. At this point no charges were laid, so the mayor is being disingenuous. I can't understand why he doesn't appear to have made enquiries of his friend, who himself knowing the gravity of the matter should have resigned, knowing he'd have to anyway

At best Glanville has been wilfully ignorant imo, knowing something was up but not pursuing it

Yeah, I'm inclined to agree with you on this case.

My early point was more about the wider point and various posters saying they would step distance themselves from anyone they knew in this position, and appearing to take it for granted that they would tell them the whole story.

Nasty accident at the junction of Clapton Common and Stamford Hill this morning :(

This is all I can find at the moment, the lorry is one of those huge scrap metal containers...

Live Clapton Common updates as pedestrian fights for life after being trapped in lorry crash

A busy East London road has been closed since 9.30am.
A busy East London road is shut after a lorry crashed into a pedestrian, leaving them trapped this morning (Monday, September 4). The accident has shut a major road in Hackney in both directions.

That doesn't look good , hopefully they pull through .

LOL ok what happened was... nothing:

And there were three serious crashes at the junction during the consultation happening.

It is a very dangerous junction, not helped by the way it's used by some vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists.
A few days ago I saw a car coming up Stamford Hill from Stokey way make a right turn into Clapton Common :hmm: and pedestrians and cyclists frequently cross when the lights are against them.
