Glastonbury 2010 - 40th Anniversary

Following in from newbies point...A few years ago, in an interview with Eavis snr, he misunderstood a reference to boutique festivals, and said "oh no, we wouldn't want to do that. We want as many people to enjoy it as possible."

Closer to home, a poster here once remarked that it's as much for a gang of blokes with an England flag surrounded by empty Stella cans as it is for (insert fluffy stereotype).

It's not quite Britain in microcosm (race is the obvious anomaly), but in many other ways it's fairly close.

I like that. Big thumbs down to cutting the numbers.

I'm with this overall, in very respect.

There was a fairly snotty-looking post from someone far earlier up this thread about the football fans at Glastonbury on Wednesday, in which that someone (memory only here admittedly ... ) expressed apparant surprise that there'd actually been no trouble. Well bollocks to that preconception! How about the fact thet ther were thousands watching the Slovenia v England match at the Pyramid**, with not a single moment of bother whatsover, and more importantly, none whatsover after the humiliating hammering for England by Germany on the Sunday of the actual festival?

**With plenty else to do/see all over the site for those not football minded

Where else would you get such a huge crowd following England or any World Cup game, and with so little bother?

For those of you after a standy-up tent, we have an Easycamp Torino 500. It's classified as a 5-berth but from experience I can testify it's a squeeze for 3.

Not too heavy or pricey but it has loads of headroom (185cm) without taking up loads of ground space (240cm2 excluding the small porch).

Just been watching the Glastonbury Highlights compilation on BBC4. Strictly one song per artist however famous (with one partial exception ;) ).

Really loved the variety -- and site footage!

A number of those featured on that programme were from the Eighties ...

Otherwise, the 'not really heard them before' band whose song I liked, were Grizzly Bear ...

That 'Bruce Airhead' character was also a quality laugh, particularly at his conclusion :p

I need a small favour from somebody please. I'm currently in the process of updating the FAQ's on GlastoEarth but I've somehow managed to mislay my copy of the Review. If anybody has one handy could I please have a scanned copy of the front page.

Many thanks

For all the nerds like me who enjoy reading all the facts and figures about Glasto the MDC report for 2010 is now online.

Ah yes. :)

Was having a nose last night. Two fence breaches & forged wristbands... and something suggesting there'll be a clampdown on the public food/bars opening before the license starts.

I think the smoking enforcement person was short on stuff to raise. One of their things was that non smoking in site vehicles should be enforced by - on first entry - logging drivers names against registrations, and doing a briefing on entry, where they are then declared responsible for any smoking infractions carried out in that vehicle. Blimey. None of that process has been suggested to cover, say, drinking and driving, but *smoking* - best get the thermal imaging helicopters out. :D

I haven't read the report but is it saying there were only two reports/incidents of fence jumping?

Bear in mind that no fence breaches have been recorded in the debriefs for the last few years at least.

Although one was an ad-hoc job by one person, the other was more organised and had several people use it. Not sure they really know how many, but they did put a stop to it.

Fence jumping has been massively reduced, it's true but it certainly still happens. And more than two people definately got over the fence this year. Alledgedly, of course.

Relevant bit (from the 'Licensing Issues' section on page 6) :

Mendip Report said:
Particular interest was made [sic :hmm: ] this year into monitoring the site on the Tuesday evening prior to the site opening to the public on Wednesay 23rd June. This identified that several of the bars were open for the sale of alcohol, and food stalls open for the sale of food. Although the site was not open to the public, the sale of alcohol and food too other traders is not permited without a licence. Further partnership work is required between GFL and the Licensing Authority to ensure that no un-authorised sale of alcohol or food is made on the site in the lead up to the event

I've bolded some key words which make me speculate that early food and alcohol sales just might? be legitimised next time (maybe on a specialist/limited licence perhaps?) rather than banned ....

ETA : And from Appendix 1(f) : Licensing, page 8 :

4. The issue of alcohol being sold and late night refreshnment being provided on the Tuesday before the event started in earnest, needs to be investigated to ensure that these activities are suitably licensed

My assessment too... maybe I was being a little alarmist in my post.
